Steve & Jay - I just walked through all the steps in the article, or at least I tried. It was definitely written for an earlier version of Edge, as the menus are different. For example, in Step 1.c., when you open the Edge Settings there is no "View advanced settings"; instead you must use "Passwords and Autofill".

Similarly, in Step 2.a., again there is no "View advanced settings"; instead, you must use "Privacy and Security".

Another confusing factor is that the author(s) sometimes switch from Edge Settings to Windows Settings in their instructions without really telling you, so you must pay attention.

I was able to invoke some of their recommendations, but not all. For example, I could never find "My search history" to turn off in Step 2.b.

So in conclusion, I don't know if any of what I did will help my lockup problem...I will just have to wait and see.

What BB said, Steve. ;)

BB, to get to Advanced click the bottom icon on the left in the hamburger menu. There will still be settings that are missing.

The My Search History in 1803 and 1809 (checked both here) is at -- Settings/Cortana/Permissions and History -- all the way at the bottom of that page.

2a is clearly wrong for 1809 and you found the right place - Edge/Settings/Privacy & Security/Cookies -- it is as described in the article for 1803.

Jay, I'm not sure what you are telling me here about missing settings. I found Advanced with no problem, but this icon was not addressed in the article, at least I never saw it. The article kept talking about 'View advanced settings', which I never found.

Steve, as shown in the attachment, I had no 'My Search History'. Maybe that was because I never used Cortana??

BB, I MAY be wrong but I think that the turned off option for 'My device history' in your screen shot MAY equate to 'My Search History'. If I'm correct it is not a factor as it is already set to off.

I checked both 1803 and 1809 and both had the My Search History at the bottom, but I had to scroll down to see that option. I do use Cortana, though, so you may be right.

You may want to look at this theme manager BB. I have not yet installed on my second system that seems to have a similar issue as yours but, at least, it is free. I doubt that it will help as most of this sort of utility just calls up the routine already being used within Windows but who knows...
https://softfamous.com/theme-manager/

According to the site info this is made by Stardock which is the same outfit that I use for my Win 10 visual enhancements. The site sort of strikes me as suspicious but Defender and MBAM state the download is safe.

Keep in mind that I have not yet installed on my second system but I trust Stardock

Steve, I did scroll all the way to the bottom but didn't see My Search History (what I show in the above attachment was the bottom). But again, probably because I don't use Cortana.

Jay, thanks for the theme manager link. However, at this point I am not ready to use one. I am waiting to see if my dealings with the Microsoft Edge Content Process helped with my lockup problem. If not, I will then disable my wallpaper slideshow and see what happens. If my system still locks up in idle mode, I will temporarily disable my IP security cameras. If I am still locking up at that point, I feel certain that by then you and/or Steve will have found a solution, lol.

I figured that you had indeed scrolled down. :-) I had to mention it, though!

I'm glad you added the "lol" to that -- I'm not so sure we'll have found a solution. :-D Well, there is the "hammer" approach. :-P

No worries. The only reason I'll really look at it is due to its being put out by Stardock. I happen to like their software. Still I don't really expect it to make a difference but Stardock tends to cover all bases. Even if the slideshow routine is part of the issue a theme manager would, probably, just call up the Windows routines. I mean why re-invent the wheel when it is already built in?

I DO suspect the slideshow aspect with a theme to be a possible cause though. I actually caught it happen. While you actually crash and I do not I do think the issue may well be related. My second system was doing its thing and then flipped backwards to the previous image. It then went to no image with the right click context menu gone. This would seem to indicate that the issue is either caused by or affects the slideshow routine. Obviously the true test for this would be to turn off the slide show but I like it and, to be honest, I'd rather restart the system every four or five days than lose the show.

This is what I hope is a final report. My dealings with the Microsoft Edge Content Process appear to have resolved my idle lockup problem (knock on wood). No lockups for a week now, and I never had to disable WAM, my wallpaper slideshow, or my IP security cameras.

Thanks to all who gave me guidance and recommendations on this problem. :bow7:

that's good news, bb. To confirm, you took what steps you could from the article we discussed on the 2nd of February, yes?

Steve, that is correct.....I took what steps I could from the 'how-to' article that you referenced back on 1 Feb. The article was definitely written for an earlier version of Edge, as the menus were different.

Well, my idle lockup problem is suddenly back, after about a month of my system running smoothly. But now I have experienced two lockups in two days, both times when I was not using my computer.

If the problem continues over the next couple of days, I will try temporarily disabling my wallpaper slideshow, my IP security cameras, and then WAM (in that order). I will keep you posted.

Just thing a bit off the wall here BB. Did you add images to the slide show before the return of the issue? If so, did you go back to the theme settings and select all? I can't really see what difference it would make but one never knows.

Also how long does each image stay on the screen? The longer the time the less the system resource usage.

Jay, no new images have been added for several months. There are currently 138 JPEG images in the slideshow. Each image stays on the screen for one minute.

Change power options to High preformance. Then go to change plan settings. Set turn off display to "Never" and put the computer to sleep to "never"

Click "change advanced power settings" click Hard disk. Where it says a certain amount of minutes select "Never".

I trust that you are not running Norton AV.

Jay, thanks for the input. I already had the settings as you suggested, with one exception. For the hard disk I had 60 minutes, which I have now changed to "Never". That is an option which seemly could have been causing my problem.

No, I never use Norton.

I did notice another interesting option that I don't understand. It was entitled "USB Selective Suspend Setting" which I had "Enabled". What is that all about?

USB Selective Suspend allows the turning off of specific USB ports. It is meant for portable systems to extend battery life. I have it disabled.

Thanks, Jay. I think I will disable mine. I like to be in control as much as I can, ha ha.
