I frequently get a screen inviting me to perform a free upgrade to Win 11 from my Win 10 Home. Before doing so, I have a few questions, as follows:
(1) Can I easily revert to Win 10 if I don't like Win 11?
(2) I currently run Win XP in virtual mode; will the upgrade to Win 11 affect this in anyway?
(3) As a long-time user of Win 10 on several computers, will I experience any major changes with the upgrade (I am a fairly fast learner, but I don't like surprises)?

Thanks in advance for any comments and/or recommendations.

An upgrade install should not affect your virtual machine at all.

Unless things have changed you will end up with a folder named 'windows.old'. This folder will stick around for 30 days during which you can revert back.

There will be a bit of a curve to get used to but nothing all that major.

YW. :)

Oh, one thing that you probably would not like is that the taskbar icons are centered but that is easy to fix by right clicking on the taskbar and going to 'Taskbar settings'. Open Taskbar behaviors and change the alignment to left.

Also I have found that in some cases you cannot directly pin an app to the taskbar. You have to pin it to Start and then from there to the taskbar. You can also just open the app's file location and pin directly from the .exe file.

BTW, I can't remember how long you have had your current system. If, by chance, you plan on getting a new rig in the next year and a half before Windows 10 reaches its end of life it would already have Windows 11.

Jay, if I can reposition the taskbar, then that is acceptable to me. But I prefer to have the taskbar on the bottom of the screen...can I do that?

Even in Win 10, I must sometime pin an app to Start before I can pin it to the taskbar, so I know how to deal with that.

My Asus desktop computer is less than two years old. When I purchased it, I loaded it up with the idea of keeping it for many years. So I plan on keeping it beyond the time that Win 10 reaches its end of life. Maybe until I reach the same milestone, lol.

I don't think that you quite followed me in the taskbar alignment... By default the taskbar is on the bottom of the screen and takes a registry hack to move. I was referring to how the taskbar icons line up. Think of using a text editor and the options to align the text center or left.

Jay, now I understand about the taskbar and icons. Originally, I thought you were talking about the placement of the taskbar itself.

To confirm, the taskbar icons can be aligned to the left side (to look like Windows 10 and earlier) through the taskbar settings. Moving the taskbar to the top or either side of the screen (taskbar location on screen) is not possible through settings as it was in Windows 10 and requires a registry hack.
