My daughter called me for help with a pesky dialog (see attachment) that pops up on her Win 8.1 desktop and won't go away, even when she clicks on "OK" or the X in the upper right corner.
It appears from reading online that this file is located in C:\Windows\System32 and is required by the OS, but malware can also masquerade as this file. She has run Malwarebytes, which comes up clean. I'm open to any ideas and/or (hopefully) solutions this group may have. Thanks.

Will it end if she opens task manager and end tasks on it?

I don't think she knows how to do that. I'll have to talk her through it by phone and will post an answer.

This is a component of Windows Problem Reporting if the file is located where you show in your post. Elsewhere it could be malware.

Try disabling Problem Reporting to see if she can get past this: http://blog.laptopmag.com/disable-error ... ng-windows

Thanks, Steve. That seems to have done the trick, at least so far. It was good to know how to stop those dumb "Microsoft is searching for a solution to the problem" messages that never resulted in them finding anything. I've gladly disabled Problem Reporting to rid myself of those time-wasting messages.

I'm glad you were able to stop the issue, but do note that sending the problem reports may not yield immediate results, despite the wording of the dialog, but the data sent is accumulated and used to develop the various updates you see from Windows Update that are vaguely referred to as compatibility updates and similar.
