Under the 'Resolution' in the article it says that it applies to Windows 7 machines. You may not find the update available now that you are in 10. You want to run a full scan on the Win 10 machines just to see if the issue carried over. Most likely it did not.

On the Windows 7 machine you would install update KB3092627 if KB3076895 is present. If KB3076895 is not present or has been removed you would look to install update KB3090303. At least that is how I read the article.

Which OS is it that is almost done with the scan, 7 or 10? Your post reads like it is Windows 7. If the scan is on 7 and finishes without issue I would imagine that KB3092627 has probably already installed.

Yes Jay that was my third machine which still has Windows 7 functioning. The MSE scan completed. As I thought Windows Updates is ready to install the bugger update KB3076895 again. I can install it and KB3092627 to see if the full scan runs. BTW, KB3090303 was never installed on that machine.

You can go in either of two directions.

1) Allow KB3076895 to install again and then install KB3092627.

2) Directly install KB3090303. This SHOULD avoid having to do two updates.

To be honest I have to advise to wait for input from Steve. While I would probably go for the option to just install KB3090303 Steve has more knowledge than I in this scenario.

Again, please try full scans with Defender in your Windows 10 installs. While I don't expect issues it is still important to proof the fact that no problems carried over from the Windows 7 installs.

I would leave the offending update installed (or reinstall it) and install the new update on the Windows 7 machine. The original update is a security patch. I don't believe that the new update replaces the offending one, but know that it fixes the full scan hang issue. In the Microsoft forums, dozens have reported that the problem with MSE was resolved after applying the new Optional update.
When I posted the information about the fix on the 3rd, I forgot that you had upgraded the machine that had experienced the issue. :-)

I'll get on that later today after running a few errands. I'll update this post. Thanks Steve.

Installed both updates and started a full scan at 11:00 AM. It's well past the problem area on the C (system) drive where the scan always got hung up and still running. I have no doubt it will complete the scan so the new update worked like a charm. :tup3: :bow7:

After wrestling with this issue for several days now (I don't know why, after all these years, that I always assume the issue is my machine and not Microsoft...), I installed the update that you guys referenced in earlier posts and now MSE works like a champ again.

I just wanted to say thanks!

Great to read, Jim. :-) (That you resolved it, not that you wrestled for several days!).
