Windows 7. The other day my contact list in windows mail disappeared. Imported them again from documents/contacts. Now when I try to send an email something has gone wrong. Lets say I want to send an email to an address that starts with "c". When I type in the "c" a drop down box comes up with address' that start with "k". If I want to send an email now I need to go into my contact list and find the person. Normally when I want to send an email to "c" it has a drop down box with all the names that start with "c".

Quote: Not sure if it would work but have you tried a Restore point to just before it happened. ? Gee whiz, it is starting to take more time to do backups and restores than making positive posts. But I guess it gives an old foggie like me something to do. I see what has happened. When I type in an addy. The whole works of my contact list comes up. Thats m/s way of saying I dont know the alphabet and they will just put up every possibility. I see what has been done. I just laugh at my failure to see what has happened.

I didn't mean the full backup restores I meant the System Restore that is part of the operating system. Did you misunderstand my post about Restore points ?

No Joan I am familiar with restore points. It is simple what M/S has done. A while back if I started an email let say with an address starting with "r" the only addies that would show up would be ones starting with "r". Now when I start a new email when I type the first letter my entire contact list drops down and I must scroll to find the one I want. With this being said lets say if I start an email with the address starting with "z", in the older days only addies that started with "z" would drop down. Now the entire contact list drops down.
P.S. Lexi had an adventure the other day. She caught her first mouse. I have it on video but didnt think it would be appropriate subject matter here.

OK I'm with you now, I'm sure though that's how it is now. I use Windows Live Mail, the latest, if I start to put the first letter in the To box the list drops down with a scroll bar for the rest but if I then put the next letter in it tends to narrow the selection down to addy's that start to match. I far as I'm aware it's always been like that, I could be wrong though. That's what happens to mine on Windows 7 and on Windows 8. My new kitten tends to go for shrews, she has caught quite a lot of those.

Here is an example. Notice the first two letters in the email address. "na" Look what the drop down box came up with. Kevin Mcmonnies

I wonder if you just have to rebuild your indices. But I still like the system restore idea.

It is picking up the "na" from the domain. You probably have nothing in your contact list containing "na" other than this one.
The fact that I see the email address twice also suggests that you have the email address as the name in the contact list and not just First name, Last name.
I have nobody in my contact with the combination of "BL" in the name or email address. This letter combination brings up a contact who has made her title in here MSN profile - Blogger.

My g/f is Nancy. That is how she is listed in my contact list in her particulars. Even if I try to put her email address countrygirl@... it comes up with something totally different.

That's an interesting twist. Try editing her Contact record and seeing if saving it forces an update of the indexing. I poked around at this when I replied previously and the behavior was as I described. The more letters entered, the better or worse the results were. If I typed a single letter, the results list was long. Adding a letter shortened the list. Adding a letter that didn't belong -- two letters that wouldn't normally be adjacent, the results list went blank as there was no match. -steve
