Hi All, today I noticed that anything I would search for in Bing (Bing is my homepage), it would consistently open in a new window. This didn't used to happen so I checked some settings then did a search in Bing regarding this problem. This page is one I looked at http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/ie/forum/ie9-windows_7/bing-opens-new-window-for-search-results-despite/344a5513-fb5e-e011-8dfc-68b599b31bf5 and it appears quite a few people are complaining about this, but no matter what solutions are brought up, nothing helps. My add-ons have been disabled for quite a while in IE and Firefox not used at all. I don't remember where in IE to set 'open in new window' so I can disable it. Is there a surefire way of preventing a new window from opening in a search in Bing, so it opens in 'same window'? This also happens in Firefox. Thanks for any ideas...katy

I think that you may find what you are looking for in Internet options in Tabs under the General tab.

Hi Jay, if you mean Tab settings, the box is checked where it says Open links from other programs in: The current tab or window. Is this where you were pointing? Also, the problem isn't with tabs, it's that a Bing search is opening in a 'new window'.

Yes, that is the area I was looking at. Try setting pop-ups to always open in a tab.
As a work-a-round you can right click on a search result and tell it to open in a new tab. That assumes that you do not want the search result to open in the same tab. I never want it to but that does not mean that you don't.

Katy, I'm seeing the same behavior today - very annoying. I checked my tab settings, nothing has changed. You didn't change your settings, neither did any of the other folks who are complaining of this, I'll bet. Ergo, something changed with Bing. I plan on waiting it out till they fix it.

Mayhaps something to do with Bing and Yahoo joining forces but I thought that was just concerning the webmaster tools sections. I know that is somewhat messed up.

What's the deal with Bing and Yahoo? I thought that deal never went through.

I don't know how far it is going but they have joined forces on the site tools such as sitemap submittal. It is kind of weird as you have to sign in via Yahoo but you use the tools through Bing. If you log in straight through Bing you can't submit a site.

Good news if it continues. Tonight I noticed when I entered after inputting a search question, it does not open in a New Window. It opens in the same window. Maybe there was a problem that was fixed, and it's back to being a super search engine. Very good news Thanks everyone!!

LOL! I guess we search in different ways. I would never want a search result to open in the same tab/window. I always right click on a result and select to open in a new tab. After I go through the search results I end up with several tabs to browse. That is one of the great things about computers; there is almost always several ways to do the same thing so that different people have a choice as to how to go about things.

Jay, I do what you do... that's not what Katy and I were talking about.
Let's say you go to Bing and you search for Cougars. Normally, the results would open in that tab - by results, I mean the list of search results. Then I would control+click to open the ones I wanted to look at in their own tabs. So I'd scroll down and maybe click on 5-10 search results. Then I'd start going through the tabs to see if I'd found what I wanted.
What happened is that yesterday, you'd go to Bing, but Cougars in the search box, and the list of results opened in another tab. Then you'd have to switch to the other tab, just go look through the list of results and see which ones you wanted to click on.

Thanks Patty, you explained that very well in less words than I had tried to. I never even sent the reply; now I just need to find the draft so I can delete it. I'm so happy it's back to the way it used to be, opening in same window. Thanks Jay for your help, you showed me the Internet options place I had forgotten. and yes I do right click a link in the results page when it's a better choice. And thanks Steve for letting us all know where this came from. When I used Bing tonight I saw a message at the top stating that there is a new Bing coming out and to enter email address to be notified, so I did. Here is the link to the 'redesign' if anyone is interested in being emailed when the new redesign rolls out. Thanks again ALL! katy http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/47375407/?ocid=ansmsnbc11
