It is looking like my 10 year old Asus laptop has a failed battery. It has been on for about 2 hours and the battery level still shows just 2% charge. While I have not yet done so I WILL pull the battery and clean contacts. Plugged into a wall outlet the system is fine and runs Windows 10 just fine.
Right now the thing is doing updates but, when done, I will pull the battery and clean the contacts. and see what happens.
A dead battery does not really concern me as, if I need to go mobile, I have a Surface 3 with about 4 hours of battery life and a MacBook Air running MacOS and Windows 10 that seems to give about 10 hours on battery so I'm not concerned if the Asus laptop can't be mobile.
My question is, if the Asus battery does prove to be dead, am I better off leaving the battery installed or should I remove it and just run off of the AC adapter. I just don't know if this kind of battery can 'leak' which could destroy the system.

I can't answer your question but just wanted to say my HP Envy's battery died but that's not removable so I just have it on mains power. I don't use it as much now since getting my Windows 11 laptop.
I gave my Asus laptop to my granddaughter, she's 7, as it wasn't big enough for me, it only had just over 300 GB hard drive. You could open the back of that one up as I did it when I put another 4 GB of RAM in.

The battery shouldn't leak, unlike an alkaline battery. You can leave it in or remove it, though there are some rare laptops that won't work on main power unless there is a battery inside. That's a rare situation, though. You can typically get a replacement battery for most laptops online. Search the model number/brand of the laptop + battery to see choices. eBay and Amazon are often choices, but there are US companies selling replacements, some even US made.

I could replace the battery but it would cost ~$100.00. Doesn't seem worth it for a 10 year old system especially when I have 2 other mobiles.

Is that for an ASUS battery or a 3rd party? In either case, I have to agree that $100 to replace the battery in a 10 year old system isn't a worthwhile investment. Considering it still works on AC power, I wouldn't spend the $.

It would be an Asus battery from an outfit in the UK. A generic battery in the U.S. would be around $130.00. Actually both stated prices are probably low as they were from several years ago when I was thinking about getting a spare. On the other hand the prices may be high. Hmmm, let's take a look... On a quick look my old prices were way high. Looks like I could replace with another 8-cell for $30.00-$40.00. Prices probably dropped a lot as there probably isn't much demand. That could make it worthwhile but I still don't see the need to bother considering that I have the Surface and MacBook Air. I mean the Asus hasn't left its spot on a desk in probably 4 years.

I plan to retire, that is wipe and donate, two computers within the next few months. That will leave me with 2 desktops, 2 Surface Pros and 1 Surface Laptop. Yes, if it runs fine with a depleted battery, that $30-40 is better spent on something else.

The Asus still gets used now and then, it just hasn't left the desk. Actually it has been a really good system. When new the retail was over $1000.00 but I got it refurbished for $479.00. Hey, 10 years later I'd say that I got my money out of the thing. One of the reasons I'll keep it for a while yet is that it has some features I don't see in a laptop very often such as wireless HDMI and 3G & 4G connectivity.

It's probably had a CD/DVD drive as well, I know my Asus had and I got that several years ago, it came with Windows 8.

I got one so I could play my music CDs if I wanted to while I was on the laptop. At the time I only had a portable player that ran on batteries and you had to listen through earphones.
