I have kept Microsoft Security Essentials going on my computer which is running Windows 7. This morning it told me that it needed to be updated, so I clicked on "update". It got about 2 inches along that line that turns green and then it seemed to be stuck. So I stopped the update and tried again. Once again it's stuck.
Shall I give up on it and download AVG or Avast or something else that is free? If so, which of the free things do people recommend? I want something easy to use. I remember I had one of the above once and I couldn't figure out how to stop this voice telling me when it needed attention!
Thanks!

I am also running Security Essentials on a Windows 7 machine and tried an update. It is hanging just like your case. I would suspect a server issue and would either start the update and just close Security Essentials and let it go or try again at another time.

I have to agree with Jay. I've been away from the Microsoft forums for the last few months due to time constraints, so I'm not aware of any current situation, but it sure sounds like a temporary server issue. I'd cancel the update and wait for it to be resolved server side. -steve

I tried it at a later time without issue.
