I'm surprised i get so emotional when i watch this, maybe it's my experience of this year, or it could just be the collective year we've all lived through.

All i know is there is no other country on earth i'd rather live through this than the one i live in.

Edinburgh's Hogmanay 2020 - Online Celebration
Fare Well is a new poem by Jackie Kay that bids farewell to 2020 and wishes a better year for 2021
Narrated by David Tennant and others, Fare Well underscores the UK’s largest swarm drone display, recorded in the Scottish Highlands and cut to spectacular views above Edinburgh.

Part One of Fare Well looks at the year gone by – the funerals and weddings cancelled, the griefs and despairs which have been collective, with a feeling that the world has become a village.

Can't wait for Part Two.

Part Two was posted today, enjoy...

Quote:
Whilst part one of Fare Well looked at the year that’s gone by, the second phase turns to look at us today and to give thanks for the many acts of community and kindness displayed by so many across the country. Jackie Kay’s narrative takes an optimistic tone, reflecting on the good of the human spirit and the sense of togetherness that has emerged from 2020.

Part two of Fare Well includes images of “WE” in the skies above Edinburgh – a message from Scotland of universality and commonality – with “WE” translated into many languages including French, Gaelic, Arabic, Greek, Korean, Mandarin and Thai.

I should probably mention that there's some Scots used in the narrative so if you don't understand some of the words it's not a faulty soundtrack ;)

The third and final part...
Quote:
The final instalment of Fare Well and a message of hope for 2021!

Whilst part one and two of Fare Well looked at the year gone by, the finale turns from the celebration of Hogmanay, the end of the year, and looks with optimism to the future. Taking inspiration from a poem by Robert Burns (Sketch New Year's Day), Scots Makar Jackie Kay echoes Burns’ question about the night of Hogmanay and asks what did ‘yesternight deliver’ and like Burns, finds that there is hope, and that it is found in nature. Burns finds hope in looking up at the skies and says that something in us never dies.

Or, all three parts can now be viewed in one video...

Isn't life strange when a loss is felt... beauty comes from places you'd never expect.

Our loss is different of course, you've lost a pillar of support who was always there for you.

I've only lost six months of my life so far, a loss i reflect on daily.

I remember when i lost my parents and grandparents, the loss of each one of them was palpable and tangible, what would have had me smiling with happiness became moments of reflection and happiness, and tears.

Our reasons for crying are undoubtably different but we share one thing, crying for a loss and that beauty prevails.

Thank you Doddie, just watched the third part followed by behind the scenes of how it was put together. I didn't go as far as actually crying this time but was moved by the beauty of it and then finding how it was put together.

It was a masterpiece and well worth watching, thank you again for posting the link. :)

You're welcome Joan :D

The funny thing with Underbelly is that for most Edinburgh residents they're not the most popular organisation in the world, the festivities in 2019/20 where they were the major organiser left huge swathes of Princes Street all but destroyed, trees were chopped down to make way for their 'market' stall decking and when they left it was a mudbath of destruction... i don't normally link to the Sun newsrag because i hate that paper but it has the pics on one page that helps convey why Underbelly are not the most popular organisation withinin Edinburgh so on this occasion i'll make an exception: https://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/news/5191315/edinburgh-princes-street-gardens-christmas-markets/

That said, Underbelly have knocked it out the park this year and credit to them for that.
