I'm lucky that i can remember when the esplanade was cobbled, it's sad that most tourists today don't see it the way it was... that said, the tattoo is pretty impressive in it's own right :)

The keen eyed might recognise where my email address comes from ;)

Most tourists think scenes like this are for them but they're not, yes they're ceremonial but they would happen whether or not they are there :)

Sadly the 21 gun salute isn't included in the video, that's done by canon fire so no surprise it isn't in a video from the esplanade! LOL

So, what does a 21 gun salute look like from Edinburgh Castle....

https://youtu.be/QX7hl3ICqgI

It doesn't look and sound like much, but believe me, at street level it sounds a whole lot louder!

As an aside, Edinburgh also has a time ball that's dropped at the same time as the one o'clock gun...

Enough of that ;)

I thoroughly enjoyed looking at all those links Doddie but I've always liked Scotland, I've been to a few places there. Thank you for posting them.

Sort of on the same vein, what's not to love about the British armed forces... okay so beating retreat isn't exactly the first thing that comes to mind, but it is the Marines and they do it spectacularly well!

I can't make up my mind if this is meant to be taking the 'michael' or if if its 'serious'.... either way, i love it!

Oh, this is serioulsly cool even if i don't fully understand the symbolism... why dress in old colonal unifroms and tartan to celebrate independence?

I'm not sure of the year this was filmed, the link suggests 2018, i'm not convinced it wasn't earlier?

Gurkhas btw are extraordinary... their commitment to the UK is beyond comprehension... i've never fully understood why but i've met a few and they have an unpararalled love for the UK that goes beyond explanation.

Skipping forward to 47" might be adviseble unless you want to view a mundane military parade...
