I am sorry to have to let everyone know that, after a long battle with cancer, Patty died on Tuesday. I'm having a bit of trouble typing so I'm just going to include the email her daughter sent to me below. Rest in peace my friend.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Hi Jay,

This is Briar, Patty's eldest daughter. I'm very sorry to have to tell you that Mom passed away on Tuesday. She passed peacefully at home. She had been having a very rough couple of weeks and took a downturn Monday night.

She was aware of her surroundings up to just a couple of hours before she passed. For myself, I'm proud of how she handled the entire ordeal. She suggested you would be the best person to contact so all the folks at Computer Haven could be informed. I know she thought highly of you and everyone else at CH.

Should you need any details from me, my direct email address is ##############. I won't be checking Mom's email at all regularly.

Briar

Oh no, this is terrible news, I'd been thinking I'd not seen her around for a while and wondered if she was OK, the last I heard from her was a message at Christmas.

Please pass on my condolences to her family when you get next in touch, like you I can't concentrate at present.

Patty was indeed our leader, and she had become a dear friend.

RIP my friend :peace:

Oh no coming back here just now and seeing Patty's photo at the top has brought tears to my eyes so I'll have to go for now to try and be quiet for awhile.

Sorry if I upset you Joan but I considered it necessary to make her always here. On a personal level it was very hard for me to do but I felt that it was needed.

It was needed, Jay. She deserved that. Thank you for doing it.

Thank you for sharing the sad news, Jay.
May she forever rest in peace. We owe her a debt of gratitude for having the idea to create this haven to offer computer help free from the technobabble and drama so common in other forums.

You are welcome, Steve. I will never be able to match Patty but I will do my best to carry on her goals and visions in my attempt to carry on this site.

Since it seemed to cause pain I removed Patty's photo from the site header just leaving the text. That should suffice and her photo will always be available through her profile. Her profile will never leave this site.

Personally, I TOTALLY disagree with removing Patty's photo this soon, and leaving nothing but the small text that many readers will miss. As best I can tell, Patty's photo caused pain only to one person, that person being Joan. So maybe Joan should do as she suggested and "go for now to try and be quiet for awhile".

We owe that to Patty..........

Sigh, OK, the photo is back. I don't know what to do people. I just feel empty and know that I can't please everyone...

That's okay, Jay. You may feel empty but your heart is in the right place...I am there too.

I am very sad about Patty's passing...she was a selfless "giver" and this site is but one example of that element of her life. When I left Microsoft and decided to strike out on my own, it was Patty I turned to for advice. She was very supportive and realistic about the challenges of running a small business. I will always appreciate her counsel.

Thanks Brian. Patty helped me with my business also. And yes, she was a 'giver'. I've been hosting and administrating this site for quite a while and a short time ago Patty turned over the domain name to me. These forums WILL continue. With help I will do the best I can to maintain Patty's legacy but I know I'm not really up to the challenge.

Just because most will not know of Brian he was a Microsoft MVP Lead for both Patty and myself when we were being awarded MVP status.

Jay
Patty left CH in your hands because she knew you could handle it.
We're all here for you bro and we all know you will do a great job.
No doubt.

Patty, because of you I met many people and some of us became close friends, all because of you. Thank you,

Patty did give a lot to people, I could see that. May she go on to brighter shores

Jay, if there is anything I can do to help, give a hollar.

Jay, I feel it's only Patty we need to please. My thinking is that she would like to be with us a bit longer, so I am suggesting to leave the photo up for awhile (maybe week or so). This would be part of our memorial service to her, since few of us are able to attend a service in Portland.

In the past month I have attended 'celebration of life' services for two local friends. In both services, there were many photos of our departed friend. In fact, during one service there was an ongoing slide show showing photos over the past many years. A nice way to remember a friend..........

You leave that photo where it is Jay, this will always be Patty's site and it deserves to be there.

OK I felt sad coming back and being confronted by it but I'm a very emotional person, I cry at sad films and they're not even real and after just reading the sad news about her passing sorry but my emotions got the better of me.

There have been a few posts since I last logged on, time difference the other side the pond, but I agree with everyone's feelings here, we all owe her a great debt for setting this place up and to you Jay for carrying it on.

We should all try to keep things going the best we can as a tribute to her memory, I know she made me a moderator here and I don't know half as much as you others but I'll continue to try and do my best.

Rest in peace Patty. xxx

Take a step back for a few days, no-one will blame you for that... moderate from a distance if you have to, no-one will blame you if you don't post for a while.

As for the photo, i agree, leave it alone... a time will come when you want to update the 'Computer Haven' crest, but this isn't the time.

For any that wish to view here is Patty's obituary.
http://obits.oregonlive.com/obituaries/ ... =188272269

There is a 'guestbook' option on the page if you would wish to say a few words. The following shoud take you directly to the guestbook.
http://www.legacy.com/guestbooks/oregon ... /188272269?

@ Doddie: I'm not sure if by 'crest' you mean Patty's photo or the CH logo on the top left. If the logo it has to stay. She actually laid out a basic design and had the logo professionally made. She loved the logo so it will stay. I know that by todays standards the forum appearance is antiquated but it is what she wanted. When I was totally re-writing a theme/skin to reflect what she wanted the forums to look like when I took over the hosting and switched software she was always hands on and, to be honest, quite a pain at times. To be honest I never liked the logo. Stlll, if I took away the logo, it would feel like I was taking a part of Patty from the site. Yes, I am down and sad but I know that my view on this will not change for a VERY long time.
