In moving from the old forum software to the new, we have lost the database of posts, as you probably know. One of the most accessed threads, or series of a few threads, on the old forum was about people being unable to open .doc and/or .docx files in Word. This became an issue in Word 2007 and 2010, both Vista and Windows 7. Occasionally someone would have the same issue with Excel and .xls and .xlsx files.
If one searched the internet for a fix for this problem, our forum was (I believe) the only place where you could get the fix. The fix is in the form of a .reg file, which when double-clicked entered information into the registry that would correct the problem. Because it is a registry file, it is not something I posted for anyone to download, though the chances of it causing a problem are slim. Instead, people would post on the thread that they had the issue, I would send them a PM with the registry file as an attachment, and instructions as to how to use it. I still have those files.
Literally hundreds of people posted with the problem and received the fix. I still have the registry fix, and will continue to send it to anyone who needs it. This is the thread, now, where one can post if you have this problem and need the fix. Hopefully the search engines will pick this topic up and people will be able to find it again.

I'm having problems opening Word files now in Windows 7. I've moved from the 2007 version to the 2010 version and I believe you have a fix for this problem. I'd be most grateful if you could send me the fix.

Hi, I don't seem to be able to associate Microsoft Word or Excel files to their respective applications. When I double click on a .docx, .doc, .xlsx or .xls file I get an error saying that it is not a valid win32 application. I am able to open these files if I open Word or Excel first and then use File/open to bring in the file.
Any help would be appreciated.

Just as a followup I have had no further issue. Thanks again.

I'm having this issue with Word 2007. It will not open doc files by double clicking on the doc file. That only results int he "not valid Win32 application" error message. I can open the files if I first open Word and then use Open to find the file and open it.
Very annoying. Also attachments to emails won't open automatically. I have to first save.
Do you have a fix that you can send?

Hi, I have the same problem. I associate a docx file with OpenOffice but I get an error message "this file is not a valid Win32 application" when I double click on it. I'm running XP.

I can't see that the fix I'm providing would have any effect on OpenOffice. Our fix is for Microsoft Word.
Have you tried just fixing the file association so that docx files open with OpenOffice?
