Some program or app is communicating with the internet in the background in such a way that my internet speed drops by about 50%. My ISP tech can observe that my computer is both downloading and uploading in the background. I can't figure what is causing this. I have actually turned off all apps running in the background.
To further illustrate my problem:
- If I start fresh by restarting both my DSL modem and my router, my Download speed is around 25Mbps
- If I leave my computer on and walk away, when I return in about 30 minutes my download speed has dropped to around 12Mbps
Any idea what might be causing this drop in speed? Thanks in advance.

First thing I would do would be a full security scan. Then I would go to process and services and disable anything that allows any specific software to automatically update.

Jay, thanks for your input, but I'm happy to say that the problem has been isolated and solved!!
The drop in my internet speed was being caused when a friend in Tennessee was remotely viewing four of my security cameras in Arkansas. Since both of us use security cameras to view wildlife around our home/property, we exchanged URLs on four cameras. That way, he could see the wildlife around my area, and I could do the same around his area.
These cameras are on 24/7, which puts quite a strain on our internet connections. We each use a software program called 'Blue Iris' that records to an external hard drive any time there is action in front of the camera.
So each morning I bring a cup of coffee into my computer area and observe any action from the night before, both from my six cameras and from four of my friend's cameras. But instead of having to view 8 hours of video from the night before, thanks to 'Blue Iris' I only have to view video clips when there was any action/motion in front of a camera.
To conclude, my friend and I have compromised and will only view two of each other's cameras instead of four. This still causes a drop in internet speed, but I can live with that...it's worth it to see a deer or bear in my friend's backyard in Tennessee while I'm drinking coffee in Arkansas.
