My Window 10 64-bit computer was running fine yesterday morning, and I left it running while I did other things. When I came back several hours later, I saw an open window announcing that Carbonite was in restore mode. I opened File Explorer to see if I could determine what is going on and was shocked to find none of my data folders or files showing.

My instinct was to reboot, but to my shock, I received the notice that Windows Failed to Start. Windows Boot Manager announced the problem is Windows\System32\winload.exe. The Status is: Oxc0000225.

My rescue boot and setup CD is not being recognized when I reboot or do a cold boot. I am dead in the water. Is there a lifeboat out there, and if so, what is it?

The error suggests that a device has failed -- either a secondary hard drive or the CD/DVD. Remove the power connector from the CD/DVD and see if the PC boots up. If not, and there's more than one hard drive, remove the power connector and data cable from the secondary drive and see if it boots.

I have removed power and data cables from both cd/dvd drives and my secondary hd. My OS is on an SSD. It still will not boot. The last line that appears on the screen is “Auto-Detecting SATA 1...” It is not seeing the SSD. It appears to me that I may need a new computer. This one is 12 years old.

If it is 12 years old it is probably time to retire the thing. Still, I'd like to go one step further on removing power. Leave the drives disconnected but also remove all power from the system including the battery if a laptop. Hit the power button a few times then re-connect the power.

Also, can you get to the BIOS? If so see if the main SSD drive shows as a boot option; I have a hunch it will not be seen. If that is the case power down again and switch the SSD data cable to another port and see if the drive is seen in the BIOS. It is tedious but try all SATA ports. If this all fails connect the other drives again and see if they are seen in the BIOS. If they are it is likely that the SSD is bad. If they are not it is likely that the mother board is gone.

A new PC would be nice after 12 years. Jay's additional troubleshooting steps are good, though. It may not be a bad SSD, but rather a bad cable or controller.

Thanks Steve! :) You brought up something that I did not as to a possible hardware issue; that being a bad cable. Yes, a different cable should be tried if available, both data and power.

The possibility of a bad drive controller is why I suggested to try different SATA ports. There are different controllers for groups of SATA ports. If one controller goes bad another may be fine. While not SATA I had this happen years ago when I was running IDE drives. System died and I switched IDE ports and all was fine. Just because one drive group controller fails does not mean that another may not be OK. Still it would indicate that the mother board is on its way out and time for a new system...

Thanks, Steve and Jay. I tried them all to no avail. I have been offline, but bit the bullet and bought a Dell XPS. I'm having some problems with it, so stay tuned. I'll add to this when things are up and running again. This is from my wife's computer :-).

Sorry to hear that the previous system could not be saved. :(

As to issues with the new system please start a new thread as it would not be directly related to this thread.

Finally getting around to reporting that all systems are up and running again. The new Dell is working very well once I determined that a USB device was causing it not to boot-up. It was not something that I currently use, so unplugging it solved the problem Thanks again for all the assistance. You guys always come through when needed.

Glad to hear things are OK. :)

Just curious, what was the USB device?
