Don't you have SP1 on disk? Does that work?

Absolutely. Yes I have SP1 as a downloaded file and it works just fine. It is only if I try to install the current SP1 via any on-line source that it fails. It fails whether done through Win Updates or downloading a stand alone install. The same is the case with IE 10. Of course I can't try IE 11 as it requires SP1 for Win 7.

As a note Win 7 recognizes the install of SP1 even though it is not really there. It will no longer show up in Updates.

When attempting to install SP1 it states that it has succeed on the first attempt but it is not actually installed. After that subsiquent attempts will do absolutely nothing.

Other than my Win 7 virtual machine I have seen this on two totally different physical systems.

If I do the update to SP1 from my stored version there is no issue. It all works just fine and I don't get the notice screen that my install is out of date.

I have tested this three times via my Win 7 virtual machind starting from a clean install each time with zero difference in results. After doing an image I have tested twice on my Win 7 laptop side with the exact same results.

If I use my archived SP1 install all is well on both systems.

Ok. Pardon me for getting lost, but where does that leave the wasted machine? Or did you just upgrade to 10 and call it good?

Heh, once again I state something that might get some angry with me: don't you just these love simple computer thingies?!

Newbies deserve better than this super complicated stuff from Windows (and elsewhere) which even we at the Haven do not completely understand (especially me)!

I am scared to death to tell any elderly person (especially my mother) to purchase their first computer: who am I more scared of, the scammers and hackers, or the software manufactures with all their complications and bugs?! Newbies simply don't understand ANY of this, and there is no reason, in my opinion, that they should have.

The 'wasted system' is alive and well. Since I had full permission to do anything needed I just saved myself time and upgraded to 10 via install media, even managed to save the 'needed' game. Yes the free upgrade is still alive and well, just via Updates.

As to my virtual machine I just deleted the virtual drive I was playing with and restored the original. With a virtual maching all that is needed to create a 'system image' is to copy one file.

On my laptop I just restored an image.

Actually I found out today that I didn't save the game. I just copied the install directory and put it back after the system was good to go. It launched to the log on screen so I figured all was well. Turns out it would not update even though they could log on. so they just re-downloaded the thing. I figure it was probably a DLL file outside of the install directory or possibly a registry entry that was needed. Personally I figure it was probably a DLL.

Personally I have to shake my head. If all they had to do was download again why the big fuss about trying to save the game? :dunno: Granted it was probably a large download as the install directory was a bit over 6 GB but still...
