I DO know that, when I just removed the drive letter for my internal image drive, Acronis could still access the drive to do images; probably due to my having set up the image backup schedule before removing the drive letter. Almost tempted to re-install Acronis (I only use the recovery media) to see if it can still access if the drive is actually set off-line but I doubt that I will. I just can't seem to find an answer to this on the web.
I have also removed the drive letter from my internal image backup drive but can't make off-line as it is actually a partition on a drive that is also partitioned as my data drive. Setting to off-line is an all or nothing thing as it involves the entire drive and is not a partition option. This is why I think it possible that setting to off-line may be more effective than just removing the drive letter.
<edit>Hmmm, mayhaps I'll create another drive in my Windows 10 virtual machine and install Acronis on the virtual machine to test...
