I run two M.2 SSD drives. One is my system drive while the other is for cloning the system drive which I do from an Acronis recovery disk.

I have used Disk Management to set the destination drive for these clones as off-line which means that it is not accessible through Windows but is through the Acronis recovery media. It is like removing the drive letter through Disk Management except that it also puts the EFI system Partition off-line.

My question is if this is actually effective protection for this drive against infection.

You would think its protected, but with the sophistication of today's viruses, you never know.

That is why I also do, both, internal and external image backups. ;)

I DO know that, when I just removed the drive letter for my internal image drive, Acronis could still access the drive to do images; probably due to my having set up the image backup schedule before removing the drive letter. Almost tempted to re-install Acronis (I only use the recovery media) to see if it can still access if the drive is actually set off-line but I doubt that I will. I just can't seem to find an answer to this on the web. :(

I have also removed the drive letter from my internal image backup drive but can't make off-line as it is actually a partition on a drive that is also partitioned as my data drive. Setting to off-line is an all or nothing thing as it involves the entire drive and is not a partition option. This is why I think it possible that setting to off-line may be more effective than just removing the drive letter.

<edit>

Hmmm, mayhaps I'll create another drive in my Windows 10 virtual machine and install Acronis on the virtual machine to test...

I disable my Windows Insider drive in the Device Manager so that my regular 10 doesn't even see it. Do the same when Insider is booted up, my regular 10 drives are disabled so that Insider doesn't see them.

Tried it in my Windows 10 virtual machine and, when the drive is set to off-line, Acronis cannot see it.

Doesn't actually prove anything but makes me feel more secure as Acronis could still deal with the drive if just the drive letter was removed.
