Really long links to sites outside of this forum can cause the site to 'stretch' in width to where it no longer fits without horizontally scrolling. The URL tag can solve this issue pretty easily. Here is an example code section to show the format. I will follow with an illistrated image later.
Code:
Here is the basic setup:
[url]site address[/url]

This does not really do anything as the long address is still there but we can modify this a bit with the following:
[url=https://jaylach.com]text to actually display[/url]

Here is the result of the above second example:
Jaylach portal

Please note the importance of this. Using the URL tag allows for posting a VERY long address but having the displayed text much shorter.

Following is an image with balloon inserts to visually explain. Please click on the image to see full size so you can actually read the text inserts. Might want to right click on the image and select to open image in a new tab. What it boils down to is that adding the equal sign after the initial [url=---- tells the tag where the actual link is to go to. The text that is between the [url=---- and the [/url tags tells the code what rext to display instead of the actual site address.

Jay, do you mean if i use the URL tag i still need to add '=' to the format the board applies when selecting the link to be flagged as a URL?

The URL tag works with or without the "=" part, but without the '=' part the alternate text is not displayed with the actual address behind that text. Note that the second example of Jay's code causes the site address to be "hidden" behind the "text to display" text. The board automatically parses links when recognized, but the actual link text displays.

Code:
Here is the basic setup:
[url]site address[/url]

This does not really do anything as the long address is still there but we can modify this a bit with the following:
[url=https://jaylach.com]text to actually display[/url]
