The last time I changed a default program in IE was about 10 yrs ago and it's changed since then. I went to settings, internet options, then programs tab, then Set Programs, but then I was stuck.

How would I set up Outlook as my default mail program within IE11 so when I click on a link in a webpage for sending an email, that my Outlook is used instead of the Mail tile? So that all my mail is in one place and if I'm looking for an email I had sent to someone down the road, I don't need to go to the Mail tile AND Outlook to find it? Is this possible anymore with Win8 and/or IE11?

Thanks!

You cannot set Outlook.com (the web email service formerly known as Hotmail) to be your default "program" for email. You can only set an installed program as the default.

When you click on a link containing an email address, that is a mailto: link. Windows knows how to handle this link by launching the default installed local (on the computer) email program.

If you really mean Outlook, the Office program, then yes, it works exactly the same as it used to. If Outlook.com is what you mean, then Steve's answer is correct.

Thanks Steve and Patty, Yes I did mean Outlook the Office program. Since this then would work the same as it used to, when I click on an email link on a website, it opens the Mail Tile and not Office Outlook. Where and how would I change the 'Office Outlook' to be used when clicking on an IE website link to Contact on their website (thus using Office Outlook as email in IE11)? I very much appreciate your help always!! Thanks so much!! katy

Go to Control Panel. Click on Default programs. Then select the option of "Set your default programs."
In the left hand window, scroll down until you find Outlook.
Click on it and then click on "Set this program as default."
After you've done that, click on Outlook once again, then select the other option for "Choose defaults for this program."
Scroll the list and you will see the mailto: URL set as being handled by Outlook.
Close the dialog, close Control Panel. Done. :-)

Hey Steve, I've been watching this a little but stayed out as I haven't used Outlook for a bit plus my version is 2007.

Now that you have given the answer I am a bit curious in relation to what I was thinking. Could you not also just open Outlook and under options just select to make Outlook the default? When I was switching from Outlook to Live Mail that is what I did except that I was selecting to set Live as default.

Thanks Steve! I will surely give this a try :). and thanks Jay, I went to Outlook / Options and mine is checked to make Outlook the default program for email, Contacts and Calendar but I couldn't find a place to set mailto: URL set as being handled by Outlook. On second thought, in the same spot there is Default Programs button so I clicked on that and it took me to the spot Steve mentioned and the box Mailto: URL mailto protocol was not checked so I'll check that and it should work, since it's the same spot Steve pointed me to. There are always many ways to do one thing and everybody is right. Thanks Guys! This will be so great!

Hi, Jay. Using the option within Outlook doesn't always set all of the defaults that are available to you via the Control Panel settings.
