I decided that today was the time to do all my numerous backups. Part of this involves updating my virtual machines. I had 4 updates for my Windows 7 virtual machine when, last time I checked, all was current.

Am I missing something? While not the same items I had a system that still runs Windows 7 as main come up with updates.

I'm not running any machines with Windows 7 any longer, but going to the Windows Update Catalog and sorting by last updated date, descending, I see updates were made available monthly. http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=windows+7+updates

Thanks for the link Steve. Seems that the majority of the Windows updates were involved with net framework, not Windows 7 specifically. Still there was one that was a security update for Windows 7.

The security update is probably the one that turns off Flash.

Yet I had an option on the Windows 7 side of my dual boot to update Flash which was supposed to end two week ago. I just removed Flash. Thought I already had...

Could that be the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool update that Windows Update notified me was available on 12/01/2020, i don't recall if it was flagged as a security update (i think it was), the only time i get the taskbar icon alerting me of an update now is if it's an "important" update (as recorded in my Update history, see below).

I don't run Windows 7 virtually and my preferred setting is to "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them", the only time Windows Update notifies me of anything since end of life in the last 6 months has been for MSRT updates.

cf. KB890830 (MSRT updates) to my surprise are still being released for Windows 7:
http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=kb890830

Another oddity that may be relevant depending on what you were doing with Windows 7 at the time... I connected my Samsung phone to my Windows 7 install on 24th Dec to copy a jpg from the phone to my PC, i presume the phone was connected to the PC at the same time Windows 7 was scanning for updates because i was notified that there were 2 updates available but when i got around to installing them (in the same boot cycle) i'd already disconnected the phone and the updates failed, twice... i have never been notified about them again, presumably because my phone hasn't been plugged into the PC since?

As you can see from the following, MSE updates continue to be released, indeed at the time of my last MSRT update i was notified i had 2 updates, one was for MSRT (Important) and the other an MSE definition update (Recommended)... Recommended updates for MSE happen in the backgroud automatically unless you happen to scan for them before they're installed.

Hope that was helpful.

To be clear, i often forget about the different date settings we use across the pond, my use of "12/01/2020" should be read as 12th Jan 2020.

Yeah, we're weird with our date formatting compared to most of the rest of the world. ;-)
