I am running Win 10 version 2004. Occasionally I will get a notice via my IP security camera software that I am utilizing almost 100% CPU. Tonight when this happened, I immediately invoked Task Manager and found that the majority of this usage was coming from two background processes:
- My IP security camera software itself was consuming 30%
- The Windows Driver Foundation-User Mode Driver Framework-Host process was consuming 44%

Applications themselves were consuming around 10%, and the remaining usage was consumed by other background processes.

So my questions are:
(1) What is this Windows Driver Foundation? From what I read, I may have drivers that need to be updated.
(2) Since I have difficulty keeping all my drivers up to date, would I be better off using a 3rd party driver updater tool, such as Tweakbits Driver Updater?

Thanks in advance...

The Windows Driver Foundation is a set of libraries and routines used by the Drivers in Windows 10. It used to be called Windows Driver Framework.

It is possible that you have drivers that could stand updating. It could also be that the IP Camera software itself could stand to be updated by the developer. When the notice appears, do you notice any performance issues on the computer? If you close the IP Camera software that the CPU load drop for the Windows Driver Foundation, too?

Personally, I don't use driver updater tools. They can be useful, but sometimes updating to a newer driver creates new problems, so I update when I am made aware of a new driver by the manufacturer of the device or PC or if I am troubleshooting a specific problem.

Thanks for the info, Steve. When I say I have trouble keeping my device drivers up to date, that's an understatement. A quick count of the devices listed under Device Manager shows an excess of 100 devices........some of these I recognize, others I have no idea what they are. Therefore, I don't always know which manufacturer to go to for driver updates. Thus my dilemma and my inquiry about driver updater tools. I just don't see how you keep track of it all without a tool.

In regard to your question about whether I noticed any performance issues on the computer when I got notified that CPU usage was at 100%? Yes I did.

In regard to your question about did the WDF load drop if I closed the IP Camera software. I don't know, because I didn't try that. I will next time it happens.

Best advice I can offer is to use Device Manager to check for updates. Just do a few at a time when you have time allowing for checking on-line.

Most of what you see in Device Manager are going to be components of the computer's motherboard -- USB, for example, will have a slew of entries for the ports on your PC even if nothing is connected to those ports.

I will await an update on what happens if you close the IP Camera software when the problem with excessive CPU happens.
