Yesterday I got something I never had on Win 10....the BSoD! I hadn't seen one of those since Win XP. And this one was totally different.

My screen suddenly turned blue with a message to the effect that a failure had caused my computer to cease operations and that the problem was being reported to Microsoft, after which Win 10 would be restarted. The error message went on to say that it was a "Kernel Security Check Stop Code", and that I could go to www:windows.com/stopcode for more info.

Sure enough, my computer restarted and no more problem. I didn't glean much info from the Windows website that I understood.

Can anyone tell me what that was all about and what usually causes such a stop code? Thanks in advance.

The stop code on Windows 10 is just like the BSOD of previous Windows versions. Basically, the operating system corrupted (in memory) to the point that it needed to restart. There can be many causes of this error. If it is a one time occurrence or a rare occurrence, it isn't worth chasing. If it starts to happen frequently, you'll want to start digging.
Here's a rather technical article for reference -- I wouldn't use it for troubleshooting your system, but I wanted to demonstrate the complexity of this error and others like it. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/window ... ck-failure

Steve typed faster than I was and beat me to it. ;) We agree in that, unless it repeats, don't worry much about it.

Thanks for the responses. I went to the article that Steve referenced.....'tis beyond my pay grade. I did go to Device Manager and saw no problems. I also went to Event Viewer, but I have yet to really be able to decipher all that it tries to tell me.

But given the fact that Windows successfully restarted and the error has not reoccurred, I assume all is now well and I just won't worry about it. Hopefully I won't get another Stop Code.

Just curious, do you remember any software you may have been running when the crash happened?

Jay, as best I recall I was inserting an SD card reader into a USB 3.0 port on top of my tower....that's the way I look at my animal videos. After Windows restarted, I was able to successfully accomplished that task and view my videos on that card.

I use Photo Gallery to view my videos & photos, but it never got started before my Stop Code. But I normally have several programs running in the background (9 currently), so I guess it could have been anyone of them.

Should I get another Stop Code, I will try to pay closer attention....this one caught me by surprise.

As I said I was just curious but sort of wondered if you were running Front Page. The reason that thought crossed my mind was an issue I used to have with Dreamweaver. Dreamweaver would not crash my entire system but would crash itself until I set Compatibility mode to Run as Admin and, also, to run compatible with Windows XP SP2. It was just a thought but, since you were not running Front Page, does not apply. :)

Well, I got another Stop Code. The error message was "Page Fault in Non-paged Area". And this time for sure it happened as I was removing an SD card reader w/card from an USB 3.0 port on top of my tower. I wonder could it be a bad port, a bad card reader, a bad SD card, or what??

I'll be gone most of the morning, but later today I will experiment with different cards and card readers, and I will even try other ports. Any other suggestions on what I might try to identify the problem? Thanks in advance.

I think your troubleshooting ideas are sound.

Here are some things to try BB if you don't isolate a faulty card and/or reader. Some systems can get weird in relation to removable media. Patty's system refused to boot if a flash drive was plugged in.

First make sure that your device drivers are up to date as this can often be caused by a driver conflict.

Do a chkdsk
1) Open a CMD window as an administrator.
2) Type or paste ‘chkdsk /f /r’ and hit Enter.
3) Allow the process to complete.

Then perform a system file check.
1) Open a CMD window as an administrator.
2) Type or paste ‘sfc /scannow’ and hit Enter.
3) Allow the process to complete.

Increase your virtual memory.
1) Right click ‘This PC’ in Windows Explorer and select Properties.
2) Click ‘Advanced system settings’.
3) In the Advanced tab click Settings in the Performance box.
4) Click Change in the Virtual memory box and uncheck ‘Automatically manage paging files for all drives’.
5) Set a custom size for the page file that is larger than the one set automatically.
6) Click Ok.
7) Reboot.

Thanks, Jay. All good info to know and do. I also located another SD card reader that I will try. I will keep you posted.
