Before I upgraded to Windows 10 I had ESET antivirus. I never had a virus with it. Am I able to use ESET or do I have to use Windows Defender? Thank you in advance.

I don't see any reason you shouldn't be able to use ESET, it's always been your choice what you want to use for an anti-virus program. What OS did you upgrade from ? Have you had a look in your programs to see if it was included in the upgrade ? I know a lot of my stuff got included but at present I use the inbuilt Microsoft offering alongside Malwarebytes and SpywareBlaster.

You'll get the experts come along soon and put your mind at rest so see what they have to say.

I never realized ESET was still on my computer. I am using it now.

Yes, you can use any compatible antivirus/antispyware program in place of Defender. Defender will be turned off.
A new feature will be available with the Windows 10 Anniversary Update that will allow you to use your chosen program for security *and* let Defender perform a periodic scan:
