My friend with the failed hard drive computer likes to do photo editing. She doesn't seem to like the Windows 10 program. In years past she used and liked Adobe Photoshop 2.0, but I don't know how well it might run under Windows 10 (if at all).

Since I'm not into photo editing, I don't know what to recommend. I told her I would ask around as to the best free program(s).

So here I am asking for recommendations........thanks in advance.

Hands down the best free app is GIMP.

Paint.net and XnView are also good utilities available through the same link as is above.

As for paid stuff I prefer PaintShop Pro over PhotoShop simply due to the user interface. PaintShop Pro is also much less costly.

PhotoShop 2 will pretty definitely not run.Are you sure that the version isn't PhotoShop CS2, not PhotoShop 2.0? Big difference as CS2 was released 16 years after 2.0. CS2 very well may run fine in Windows 10.

Photoshop 2.0 was the second installment of Adobe Photoshop. It was released in June of 1991. It featured an upgraded user interface and paths. Photoshop 2.5 Edit. Photoshop 2.5 was an upgraded version of Photoshop 2.0 that was released in November of 1992. This was the first of the verions of Photoshop that supported Windows operating systems.

Thanks, Jay. I forgot all about our CH downloads, duh.

I had read about Gimp, but said it was at "expert level" which I don't think my friend could handle. I had also read about how old Photoshop 2.0 was. I do think that's the version she meant but will ask. She still has an old Windows XP in her closet, which was probably what she used.

Appreciate it.....

YW. :)

The thing with GIMP isn't that it is all that more advanced than PhotoShop or PaintShop Pro. The thing is the learning curve as to how functions are named. For instance, in Paint Shop Pro, to resize an image you go to the image tab and select 'resize'. In GIMP it is in the same place but called 'scale' instead of 'resize'. The biggest hassle with GIMP isn't that it is an 'expert' level app. The learning is in that it names functions differently which can make them difficult to find.

As to your friend having an old XP system; PhotoShop 2.0 would still not have run as 2.0 was a DOS app that would not run under Windows. Version 2.5 was the first to run under Windows, probably Windows 3.1 as it was released in 1992. It is extremely doubtful that version 2.0 would run under Windows XP which was released in 2001. This is why I question if it may be possible that the PhotoShop version is actually CS2, not version 2.0. Unless your friend had an OLD DOS based system I just don't see how version 2.0 could ever have been used.

CS2 was released in 2007 which makes it seem much more likely if it was used on an XP system with XP being released in 2001.

Jay, my friend retrieved the box and it did say Photoshop 2.0. As best she remembers, they used it back in the Windows 95/98 era. So she knows it won't work on Windows 10.

What I will do when I get her desktop computer up and running is to install the two freebies: Paint.net and XnView. If she doesn't like either of those, I will try PaintShop Pro, which sells for around $48.

Thanks for your wisdom & advice......

I guess I can see PhotoShop 2.0 running on Windows 95 as Windows 95 relied on DOS.

Paint.net is a pretty decent package.

<edit>
Might also want to look at Irfanview.
