I was just reading an interesting article about OneNote vs Evernote. I've never used either and was wondering if anyone else uses one or the other. If so, what do you like/dislike about the one you use, and what do you primarily use it for?

Thanks in advance...

To be honest I don't use either. Wouldn't mind reading the article though if you still have the link. LOL! Guess that I'm getting lazy. I could always just put in a search of 'OneNote vs Evernote' and I'm sure I'd find. ;)

On an initial search I found the folling in a short clip.

  • The free version of Evernote includes ads, while OneNote does not.
  • OneNote is integrated with Office, but Evernote is not.
  • In Evernote you can send the notes by email, but in OneNote this option only supports Outlook.
  • Evernote allows you to save notes as PDF documents, but OneNote does not.

The thing that jumps out at me is Evernote's free version being ad driven. Apparently the paid versions of Evernote are pricey but I didn't actually look for a price.

<edit>
To get rid of the ads in Evernote it would cost $7.99 / Month. On a per month basis that is more than my entire Microsoft 365 subscription.

I'm a OneNote user and have been for many years. When I was really active in the Microsoft forums, OneNote was my clippings location for repeatable responses and links. I also used it at work before retirement to store reference materials. I deployed a shared notebook on the department SharePoint site for my team to share that information before I retired.
I still use it to store notes that I'll refer to later. I have my OneNote files stored on OneDrive, so the notebooks are available to me from my computers and phones. I can also access it via the web from a computer that isn't my own. I've never pursued EverNote since I already had OneNote available to me.

@Jay - Here are the two links I read:
https://www.cloudwards.net/evernote-vs-onenote/

https://www.computerworld.com/article/2488890/desktop-apps-onenote-vs-evernote-a-personal-take-on-two-great-note-taking-apps.html

@Steve - OneNote is a concept in which I have never really engaged, so it is somewhat foreign to me. However, I am a moderate learner, so can you recommend a training guide or video to get me up the curve? I do use Sticky Notes, but that's a very simplistic approach to note keeping.

Thanks for the links BB. :)

From going through both articles I'd suggest playing with OneNote as you already have it included with Office. If you find that it does not do all you are actually after then look at EverNote. Of course you could go with the free version of EverNote and compare the two side by side as long as you don't mind the ads in EverNote's free version. As a ""note"" I have no idea as to how intrusive the ads in EverNote happen to be.

Sticky Notes is good for jotting down notes, but there is no organization inherent in Sticky Notes. OneNote uses the concept of a book with sections and pages. Here's a description of the basics -- https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/introducing-onenote-38be036d-5b5a-49ad-83be-292fe53ad7b3
And I never took any course or guide for OneNote, I just started poking at it and when I needed to do more advanced stuff (at the office for sharing on a SharePoint site) I did some searches for help on how to do those things.
This link appears to have some good basic information on using OneNote:

I use OneNote, I have lots of sections in it to save numerous items like, shopping, knitting recipes etc. I still have sections in it for XP and Vista. :D
