I have been running Office 2016 since that year, but recently purchased Office 365 and installed it thinking it would overwrite 2016. It didn't, so I now have both versions on my computer, but 2016 is the one running. All of my Outlook email subfolders and contacts/address book entries are in that version, so I can't just uninstall 2016 without losing them. How can I transition to Office 365 without losing my Outlook data?

Have you set up Outlook for your email account to send/receive email in your new Office 365 install yet? If so, you can simply use the Import feature in Outlook to import all data from the old PST (personal folder) file into your new profile. Once complete, you can then uninstall Office 2016.
You can find the location of your old PST file by opening Outlook 2016 and going to File/Account Settings/Data Files tab.

Steve, the problem is I don't know how to open anything in Office 365. My start menu only lists one link to each of the Office apps, and they all open Office 2016 apps. How do I get to Office 365 apps?

I'm going to assume that you want to make shortcuts on the desktop, taskbar or start menu....

Unless you picked a different install folder this should be the install path for Office 365:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\Office16

Here the names of the launchers:
Access = MSACCESS.EXE
Excell = EXCEL.EXE
Outlook = OUTLOOK.EXE
Power Point = POWERPNT.EXE
Publisher = MSPUB.EXE
Word = WINWORD.EXE

Right click on any of the executable and create a shortcut to where you want.

Gerry, what you want is in Settings/Apps/Microsoft 365

How do you do anything there Bill? The only options I see are modify and uninstall. :dunno:

If you uninstall Office 2016, you will not lose any data files, including your PST for Outlook. You will probably need to reconfigure Outlook for your email account(s). After you uninstall Office 2016, if you no longer have Office 365 links, reinstall Office 365.

Steve, two questions of my own.
1) Would you just install 365 again or uninstall 365 and then install or would you just do an on-line repair of 365?

2) Just to be safe I'd probably make a copy of my PST file. Would you concur or would that be absolutely not needed?

Did you try Modify?

Yes and it just gave me the option to repair Office 365 either with a quick or on-line repair.

I would first try just installing. If it complains that it is already installed, but I don't see the Office shortcut(s) on the Start menu, I'd try repair.

No need to make a copy of the PST, though it would be a valuable backup if none exists already. The important thing is to know where the PST file is so that it can be imported from when Office365 is eventually setup and good to go.

OK, I've now tried all your helpful suggestions, and nothing worked. Today I uninstalled Office 2016, leaving Office 365 listed in Apps, but it appeared to be the same as 2016. I then uninstalled 365 and reinstalled it. Again, the apps appear the same as they did in 2016; they all work, but there is no difference from what I've been seeing in 2016.

In outlook, there is a statement that not all features are working pending an update, but when I click on the Update Now button, nothing happens.

What do you see when you select File/Office Account?
What happens when you click on the Manage Account button in the banner?

Below is what I see when I do File/Office Account.

So it appears there is something wrong with the billing/credit card. I'll have to check into it in the morning, or later this morning as it's now 1:30 AM here!

I suspected that it wasn't activated. Hope that it turns out to be an easy fix.

Mission accomplished -- I had not given Microsoft my card's new expiration date so they couldn't process the charge. Thanks for the help, Steve.
