OK, so I don't even carry a cell phone but that does not mean that I don't pay attention.

It would seem that ALL current smart phones have an FM radio chip. It would also seem that the service providers refuse to activate this chip as they want you to pay to stream music.

There is an organization that is fighting this. If you are interested visit
http://freeradioonmyphone.org/

Oh, from radio broadcasts here in Sheridan Wyoming, there is supposed to be a free app available to access this FM radio chip on this site but I sure cannot find it. Mayhaps you have to access the site from a smart phone to see the link to the app... I just do not know...

It works on mine Jay, mind you I don't listen to it so it wouldn't have bothered me if it wasn't activated. I just had a look, it told me it needn't headphones as they acted as the antennae, oh don't know if I've got any with this phone, no problem I'll try the ones I use with my Kindle. They worked, at first Cortana asked me if she could help but moving the tuning slider I got a station.

This is a Nokia Lumia 520 using Vodafone as the network provider.

If anyone is interested in this I've done a bit more looking...

The free app to access the FM radio chip is not at http://freeradioonmyphone.org but rather at http://nextradioapp.com/ although http://freeradioonmyphone.org does link to http://nextradioapp.com.

It looks like the app is currently for Android and iPhones. There still IS a catch. Your phone's service provider still needs to activate the FM radio chip. From the little I've looked Sprint seems to be the only one willing to do so at this time.

Joan, glad to hear that it is all good on your side of the Pond, not so much on this side...

I don't know about the radio chip but a lot of stations stream online and they are easy to get on your phone. Of course, there's loads of music there with the likes of Pandora and such. Unless you really want to hear that particular station and it doesn't stream there's lots of other stuff around. I'm listening to Pandora on my phone right now - smooth jazz and very few commercials on the free app.

I did install the NextRadio app but Verizon hasn't enabled the chip on my LG G3. The app works but to no avail. It does look like Sprint is the only carrier doing this. They did it for my phone. Next time I'm at the Verizon store I'll ask about it.
