I believe that I am finally going to break down and purchase my very first smartphone. This will probably be a Motorola with Android 4.x. I do not know squat about securing a smartphone. Can anyone give me some pointers/tips or refer me to a website with smartphone security info.

I'm also a luddite when it comes to smart phones since all I want is to do is make phone calls. The world however disagrees with me as my new car would rather have a smart phone for all of its features to function. I may have to break down as well and wouldn't mind knowing the answer to your question.

To be honest I can't help as I've not done anything security wise with mine. I have a Nokia Lumia 520, which runs Windows 8. I don't really need a mobile as I'm not mobile so could just get away with the landline, but as I love gadgets and new technology took up an offer from my mobile operator and got the phone free by taking out a monthly contract which was only a couple of pounds more than I was paying each month for my pay-as-you-go. Just got myself a Nintendo 3DS XL so I think I have enough for now, well until the next OS comes out and off we go again.

I have an Android phone and most of the usual vendors (Comodo, Kaspersky, Avast, etc) supply free, or for a reasonable charge, apps that include things like Anti-virus, Anti-theft, Anti-malware etc. Personally, i use Comodo Mobile Security, not because 'i know' it's any better than the others rather it just seems too work without slowing the phone down... frustratingly there doesn't seem to be the same emphasis for comparisons when it comes to mobile phone security products as there is for say laptop security, so it's hard to know if Comodo will really meet my needs should i come across a nasty. That said, i figure it's got to better than having no security at all. As for pointers, other than the UK's Ofcom website which offers fairly basic common sense advice i don't know of any but i hope it helps. http://consumers.ofcom.org.uk/2013/10/s ... ce-secure/

Ha! That would be scary! No, I'd never say a bad word about Malwarebytes. I think I could safely say it is my favorite non-Microsoft program.

Incredible, Terry. I was aware that Android and Apple phones were becoming a lot less secure, and that helped along my decision to get a Windows Phone. But I will look into my Flashlight App on the Windows phone in any case.

I removed mine too, even though I have a Windows phone. Why? Because it was a 14 MB program.

I have zero security issues with my phone. Well not entirely true as the FBI, CIA, PFA, etc. could intercept anything if they wanted to monitor me thanks to the over blown Patriot Act.  Don't ask what PFA stands for. If I answered I'd be banned from this site.  I have nothing but a land line and like it that way. I guess I'm an antique.

There is nothing wrong with your plan Jay. Smart phones are all about convenience. Society has migrated to "must have information and everything else at our finger tips right now". What has gone by the wayside is personal privacy. We are more exposed than every but basically look at it with a blind eye. I admit to being spoiled by the technology. There are some good apps that help with my car such as OnStar and Bing or Google maps. One must be careful when using these devices.
