For regulars I think it is known that I am not exactly a fan of cell phones but can see why some may need.

What I REALLY don't get is the commercials I'm seeing for the new iPhone. The main thing they seem to be pushing is that it has three cameras. WHY?

I will admit that my Android tablet has two cameras but it sort of makes sense as there is a camera front and back allowing the use of the tablet as a camera using the back lens and the other front lens serves as a web cam. From what I can figure on the new iPhone with the three cameras they are all on the same side of the phone. I'm not trying to put it down but I REALLY don't understand... Does this allow for 3D imagery; if so two lenses should suffice for that. I just really don't get it.

Each camera is dedicated to a focal length -- normal, wide, telephoto - on the back of my newly acquired Samsung Galaxy Note 10+. The front facing camera is number 4. I assume that the iPhone is similar.
This is from my phone's specs:
Rear
Ultra-wide: 16MP sensor, ƒ/2.2 aperture, 123-degree field-of-view
Wide-angle: 12MP sensor, Dual Pixel autofocus, ƒ/1.5+ƒ/2.4 apertures, OIS, 77-degree field-of-view
Telephoto: 12MP sensor, ƒ/2.1 aperture, OIS, 45-degree field-of-view

Front
10MP sensor, Dual Pixel autofocus, ƒ/2.2 aperture, 80-degree field-of-view

So there you go, Jay. Some people need FOUR cameras on their cell phone, lol.

I mean, a phone is a phone. So how else is Apple (or Samsung) going to sell new phones....they do so with more cameras, more colors, better battery life.

2 is enough for me on my iPhone SE, a front and a back, that's really all I use it for anyway, oh and my daughter sending me texts. There is the odd Facetime call as well. :-D

I do actually have an old cell phone that hasn't been active in close to seven years. If I ever go on a road trip I'll put minutes on the thing just in case but I really don't find that I have a need for everyday stuff.

I do need to dig the thing out one of these days to see if the camera will work with the phone having no minutes. If the camera works I may carry it as it just isn't practical to carry my Canon Rebel T3 around all the time.

Hubby only has a basic mobile which he got just for emergency when he goes out in the car so he can get in touch with me or the breakdown service.

It just takes and receives calls and he can text and that's it, he has it on PAYG but very rarely has to put any money on it. The network provider sends him the odd message offering different deals but he tells them he doesn't need them and he's quite happy as he is.
