Yesterday and this morning Outlook showed unread messages in one of my email Inboxes yet the folder is empty. The email account is POP3. Any idea as to might cause?

I have restarted the system and Outlook. I have also sent a test email from another account to the one in question and it came through fine. I also sent a message from the account in question to another and that was also fine.

As an added note I checked the web based version of the email in question and the inbox was empty. I don't really know if that proves that the 'phantom' unread count for the inbox in Outlook is a glitch where there should be no count shown as I have the account set to delete from server. I changed the account setting to leave a copy on the server to double check this.

OK... With leave a copy on the server I had two more emails come in on the account through Outlook but nothing shows in the inbox. On the web based version the two emails are there. ??? I'm lost on this. My inclination is to remove the account in Outlook and re-establish but I don't want to do so until I hear something.

Oh, YES, I did an on-line repair of Office without a difference.

First, have you checked your junk mail folders? Do you have any rules that move messages?

Edited -- this would be the second thing to try.

The views in outlook can become unresponsive causing it to not display the emails.
Reset the view in outlook
Open outlook and select the folder you are having issues with.
On outlook ribbon click “View”
Under current view category, click the Reset View
Reset views button in the view ribbon.

Another thing to try if the above still doesn't resolve it --

In the “Search Current Mailbox (Ctrl+E)” box, type: read:no
and hit Enter.
Then when it shows, “Find More on Server” link, click it. The unread email should appear.
Click the “X” in the search box to clear the “read:no” search.

If there's still a problem, yes, remove the account and recreate it.

If that still doesn't resolve it, next steps would be to create a new profile and set up the account(s) again with a new data file, followed by importing the old data file contents into the new one. Lots more work to do that and I won't go into the steps unless you need to go that route.

Thanks Steve,

Reset of view did nothing.
'read:no' did nothing. Actually that is not totally true. If I do a 'read' or 'read:no' I will see a bunch of emails but they are old, not current. Even for this I have to select all mailboxes, not just the current selected.

Hmmm, I think that I may have found the issue. At the bottom of Outlook it says I'm working off-line. So far I have not found how to put back on-line but looking... ;)

Looks like the issue may be solved. I went to the 'send/receive' tab and clicked on the 'work off-line' option which is actually a toggle as on/off. Did a send/receive and had a bunch of emails.

Yep, just saw your post, Steve, as I was typing. That was the issue it seems. I'm now receiving normally. I just don't understand how I got changed to working off-line.

Actually Outlook told me how to fix. In the 'tell me what you want to do' field in the top ribbon I just typed 'work on-line' or something like that.

Excellent! Sorry that I didn't think of that option before all of the repair options. :-)

Hey, I didn't think of it either and had already tried an on-line repair of Office. I just happened to catch the notice at the bottom saying I was working off-line.

Now to re-establish SETI@Home and see if the issue returns. Sigh, just recently got back into processing for SETI and it is better than when I last quit but still has issues. SETI@Home is now encompassed with a lot of other projects through a package called BOINC. When I started BOINC did not exist and it was just SETI@Home. BOINC came in and wanted to take over my system so I quit. It is a LOT better now but I still see issues. LOL! You know me... I have no choice but to re-install just to see what happens.

Sigh, there is still one thing that I don't quite understand. So, OK, Outlook was set to be working off-line yet it would show a count of messages coming in. I can follow this. Since I was actually on-line except for Outlook being set to be off-line it could detect that there were emails but just did not download.

What I don't get is that I was able to send and receive emails between my accounts even though I was set for Outlook to be off-line. Does Outlook look at a local system as being on-line even if Outlook is set to be off-line? I have 4 email accounts that I monitor. Three are POP/SMTP and the 4th is MS Exchange. I could send from any of the POP accounts to another without issue except that it took some time to show. To be honest I can't remember if I could send/receive via the Exchange server but I THINK I sent to one of the POP accounts and got the email.

Hard to say what actually happened. When sending mail, you initiated a send manually, I think. I believe that Outlook may have then checked for messages, reporting that there was mail available on the server, but it was not downloaded as you were working off-line.
