Post subject:  Windows 10 Mail app layout

I'm working on possibly switching to the Win 10 Mail app. In fact I have all my 5 accounts set up and working while also keeping Live Mail 2012 intact.

Actually I THINK that I could get along with the thing except for two issues...

1) If any are using the app in Windows 10 have you figured out any way to change the layout from the default where the mail list is on the left and the read pane on the right to where the mail list is above with the read pane below? While not any kind of deal breaker I would MUCH prefer the second scenario.

2) Has anyone figured out a way to import email from Live Mail 2012 to the Win 10 Mail app? So far I have found no option for any type of import within the Win 10 Mail app. I can work around this issue but would love to be able to import. The way that I would 'work around' would be to just email from one account to another the last post from each conversation which would, also, include all sends involved in the conversation. Actually this would probably prove to be MUCH more efficient as I would then have one email for a conversation rather than many. Another thing is bill payment confirmations. Again, I can just send the last transition and go from there. I mean... If the last transition shows paid in full I really don't need all the previous confirmations.

Considering all the above I could then remove Live Mail yet keep the data store as a compressed file. If anything off the wall came up I could re-install Live Mail and in-compress the data store.

Sigh, I'm really not sure how to ask what I'm asking... Does anything in this post make sense?

It makes sense, Jay. :-)

1. There is no way to rearrange the display of the Mail app on Windows 10.
2. There is no import/export functionality in the Mail app on Windows 10.

You already figured that out, though!

Jay, just a note on the layout. Try the preview pane on the right for awhile. I find it is a much better layout - you actually get to see more of the email at once and in a more natural and easily read configuration.

I can deal with the side by side layout Patty although I prefer the top bottom. Of course some of that is just what I 'm used to as I've set the layout that way since Outlook Express.

So far I only have one major complaint with the Windows 10 Mail App. The complaint is that I have to change the font for each and every email I send unless I want to go with the default of Calibri at a size of 11 points which I do not. I would think that being able to set your own default font would be a basic function in an email client. Doing a search I see a LOT of complaints on this. Hopefully this will be corrected.

Another complaint but minor is that the contact list is not included within the mail app but rather in a totally different app. Since they are integrated it isn't a big deal but seems cumbersome.

Now for a few things that I DO like about the app.

1) While I would rather an editor for setting up a mail signature that allows formatting at least, if you put a link in the thing, the link will work.

2) It was easy to set all my 5 emails to use the same inbox.

3) The easiest account setup I've ever seen. As to an MS, Yahoo, Gmail and iCloud account you just need to select the provider and enter the ID and password. For others it is just about as easy. I have three email addresses through my hosting and, after selecting the bottom choice in the image below, I just had to enter the ID, password and server names for POP3.

Sigh, now if I can just figure out how to get the function to add folders to work as I wish I will probably be OK with the app.

Well okay. I don't have any real defense of the app. I do not use it. I use Outlook and have for years and am totally satisfied with it.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not looking for nor offering defenses for the Win 10 Mail App. I'm just looking at the thing and playing. :) I REALLY like Live Mail but it no longer downloads my Hotmail emails. I guess that the patch offered to keep it working does not work after account migration and/or the Windows 10 Anniversary Update.

Since I run Office 365/2016... whatever it is supposed to be called... I, of course, have Outlook. Outlook may well be my end solution but I wanted to look at the Win 10 Mail App first. My only complaint with Outlook has always been that it is just a total overkill for what I need. Still I MUST admit that overkill is a lot better than 'underkill'.

Yes, now that you are migrated to an Exchange back end, Mail will no longer work with that account.

I have to admit that this issue irks me a bit. Quite a while back MS sent an email to Live Mail users offering a manual patch that would allow Live Mail to continue to work after the migration. I applied the patch... so much for that... :( Of course I can't actually know if it is the migration or the application of the Annivrsary issue of Windows 10 that actually broke Live Mail. In either case, since MS stated that Live Mail would continue to work with the manual patch, the breakage should not have happened.

That was a different migration, Jay. That was more of a user interface type of thing, though I am sure there were behind the scenes changes as well. That was not the migration to Exchange however.

You are right though, this should not break the Mail app - and perhaps they will fix it. Or maybe they really just want everyone using Cloud email.

As far as Windows Mail, I just don't know. I don't think that was ever made to handle Exchange.

In reality none of this is more important than a really irritating itch. Still, not for the first time, I am again tempted to drop all email providers except for the ones through my hosting. Sigh, the problem with that is that one does not realise how many things are linked to specific email address. You have to be SO careful when dropping an account. Say that you were registered on this site with an account but visited very rarely. You drop an email account and then need to ask a question here but cannot remember your log on info but do remember your user ID. Sorry but you will never get back in. You click on the option for forgetting your password and you know your user ID. Cool, the forums will send you an email to reset your password... Opps! You will never get the email as you killed that email account... I've been 'killing' Gmail for, at least, six months and am still not done.

When I change or get rid of an email account, I build a record in OneNote of every single site, as I visit them, and which email account is associated with them. Then I keep a record that they were changed and what they changed to. You are correct, it takes months, usually around 6 I have found - but it's the safest way to do it.

I also keep a section in OneNote of all my passwords as I create them. That section is password protected. ;)

I found that patch didn't work for me either but don't know which update broke it, I loved using Live Mail as it worked the way I wanted it to with RSS Feeds having their own folder instead of being part of the Hotmail list.

I tried Outlook but found that to be very busy with way more going on than I needed, so thought I'd give the Windows 10 Mail app a try. Got all my accounts set up but it keeps complaining about some accounts being out of date, they are my ISP accounts, when you go to check the settings they ask you to change the password, yet the same passwords work and cause no problem when in Outlook or Windows Live Mail and they are the correct ones for my accounts. Another thing is no RSS Feeds.

One of the things I really liked about Windows Live Mail was the Storage Folders under the list of accounts, under that I had a list of folders for specific mail and rules set up that sent the mail as it came in to their own folder.

In Outlook I haven't found a way to have those folders in their own list they show under whichever email account they arrive in.

I have started to use Outlook more because I have email coming in from Hotmail and Outlook so don't want to lose those accounts.

I know it must be hard trying to cater for everyone's taste. :-)

@ Joan: The first paragraph below may be of help to as to your storage folders. As to the message about accounts being out of date in Windows 10 Mail App I had the same thing but just clicked to keep using and have not seen the message since.

I had no issue moving my folders from Live Mail to Outlook 365. I did an email export from Live Mail in Outlook/Exchange format selecting to export all folders. I didn't even need to import to Outlook as it did it automatically. I had to hunt a bit to find the stored emails sorted by sub-folders for each person but it was there. I then just dragged the specific folder that holds all the sub-folders to my Hotmail account folder as Hotmail is the most commonly used. I then deleted all the folders that were imported but not needed. It was actually quite a simple process but took a while for all the emails to show. The only issue I had was that the export from Live Mail offered no option to pick a save location and I could not find the file. I will assume that the export via Live Mail detected Outlook and just did an export and import at the same time as the folders and emails are there within Outlook. I'm sure that I could have cut down on the deleting folders that were imported but not needed if I had just specified my 'Stored Emails' folder instead of selecting to export ALL folders from Live Mail.

All five of my email accounts are set up and working properly in Outlook. The only thing that I have left to do is to combine all incoming emails from all five accounts to a common Inbox. I can do this by setting up rules to move all incoming emails to a specific folder but would rather find a setting to 'join' all the Inboxes. I DID make a quick attempt to set a rule to move incoming emails to a common folder but it only allowed me to chose from contacts. I want ALL emails to show in a common Inbox. I'll get there. :)

Thanks Jay, I'll have a go at the export when I've got a few minutes to spare, after I've read the paragraph a few times to get it clear in my mind. ;-)
