When using W10, is there any way to open the address book in a .pst file from OL Express which was previously used. My friend is now using a WEB based email program and would like to get his address book back. He tried Mail but the did not work for him. I have been able to open the file but in a format that really does not work at all. I guess I could install OL and then try to upgrade it?????
He is trying to recover the birthdays for the file and print them out.
If this is the incorrect place for this please feel free to move it.

Lordy, it has been years since I used Outlook Express. But It did not use the PST system. It can import a pst but not actually use the file directly. If you are seeing a pst file it is from an install of Office.
If Outlook Express is still installed the info possibly could be exported as a CSV file. I don't know if I can be of much more help. Steve may be able to add insight.

I forgot that about OL Express. Yes OL was on the system at one time. OL Express is removed when W10 is installed, that much I do know.

I just wonder if the upgrade to Windows 10 that removed OL Express would not also remove the data store... Another thought is about how long ago the system was upgraded to Windows 10. If recently it is possible that the 'Windows.old' folder still exists and the system could be restored to the previous version. This would bring back OL Express and the data could be retrieved.

I had looked for that previously but no joy.

Yes, as already noted, the address book from Outlook Express would be a .wab file. A .pst file is from Outlook. If there's a .pst file from Outlook it would contain a Contacts folder and also a calendar folder. You could open the .pst file in a copy of Outlook and export the data in either or both of those folders in a .csv format.

I will let you know how I make out.

Namely, 'Outlook Express' and 'Outlook' are very different software where the former predates the latter, put into abbreviations Outlook Express was often shortened to OE, and Outlook as OL, but i've never seen or heard of OL Express. Thunderbird is free and has no bloatware so shouldn't cause any issues. That said and from i've read so far, your saviour might be to install Thunderbird because it can import pretty much any files from any email client, allowing you to export whatever you need into a file format that your friend can then import into their webmail client... especially from a .pst file. The current build of Thunderbird supports: System Requirements - 102.11.0 Quote: Windows Operating Systems
Windows 7 Windows 8 Windows 10 Windows 11 Source: https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/102.11.0/system-requirements/If it turns out the latest build of Thunderbird doesn't support importing .wab files etc then i suggest you try an earlier build of Thunderbird because i know it used to be able to import .wab & .pst etc files.... quite which build you'll need i'm not sure but it is possible to download pretty much all earlier builds with a little knowledge... See the "chosen solution" in this Mozilla page: How to download older versions of Thunderbirdhttps://support.mozilla.org/bm/questions/1347599[Note: as far as i can tell editing the links is as simple as changing the build number.]Unfortunately you might need to do a bit of research into which build of Thunderbird will work for your requirements by reading the release notes but i'm confident you'll find a build of Thunderbird that will do exactly what you need... i'm also hesitantly confident to say that you might not have to setup a live email account to import and export what your aim is. Hope that helps and good luck.

Just had a DUH moment. What is/was email provider that is in relation to the address book? If you go to the web based version for that email the address book may well be there...

To add to the above I just checked my @hotmail.com account on-line and my address book/contacts was there.

Just to let you know that I have not forgotten you here. I have not been back to continue my trials on this problem. My client has been getting along without these additional email addresses for some time now an probably will not need me to continue this "fools errand". I do have a new fan to install but the old one (almost brand new) seems to have quieted down.
