Having installed Windows 8, clean install as it will not upgrade from RC, I now have a Private Network. Is there some way to make that a Work network?

All it wants me to do is set up a Homegroup, which I do not run.

It seems my network has split in two and the two halves can not talk to each other and I am wondering if this could be part of the problem.

I am running 7 still, but I chose to leave the Homepgroup on all my machines and just use a simple shared folder for network access to all the machines. Check in the Network and Sharing Center for all the settings you can play with. You may have to go into the Advanced Sharing Settings and tweak a few of them.

No problem in Win7, the problem is in Win8 where the networking is different.
(This computer was working on the network fine right through RC, but after the install something seems wrong.

Private should be exactly the same as Home/Work, Bill.
Do you use a workgroup? Control Panel/System to change it to match what is on the other machines in your network.
And in the Network and Sharing Center, set File and Printer sharing and Network Discovery as desired.

I will take a look later today.

Thanks Steve, another change in terminology.

No I do not use Homegroup Steve.

I added a new router, in so doing I transfered all the wires just like my setup on the old router and what also has happened is that my WHS is now recognized at Other and not in the Network Map anymore. This means that I can not access it from this computer and since I run it headless I am unable to get to it. Why would it leave the network? and how do I get it back in the network?

Interesting point: the network map has added a hub, and I only have a switch which also shows. The map no longer looks like what it should look like, expecially with the WHS not being able to be placed in the map.

Workgroup under the System information, Bill.

WHS, assuming the original, based on Server 2003, doesn't do HomeGroup. Are all of your computers part of the same Windows Workgroup? Is File and printer Sharing and Network Discovery enabled?

Thanks again Steve. I checked and all are in the same Workgroup. What happened, and this is after contacting Cisco, and this is their new router, I was able to finally connect with my print router, however that changed the IP range from 192.168.1.* to 192.168.0.*. For some reason all the computers did not all go to the new group and stayed as they were....well this caused basically 2 networks to be created. This in turn did not allow me to contact my WHS as it was "stuck" with its old IP address (I forgot that I had that reserved). Well we switched things back and forth a number of times and all seems right again.

Aparently there is not a way to get a network map in Windows 8.

And after all this the new router does not seem to have that much greater strength than the old one. But there are fewer dropped connections on the wireless part of the network (laptops and DVD) so all is not a total loss(and the new router has better security as well).

I can not tell you how impressed I have been with the Cisco help, there basically were multiple calls only because I needed to end the call so I could get something to eat. They called me back so we could complete our trouble shooting and the WHS problem was not noticed until everything was working.

Thanks for the update. Sorry that I didn't think to ask you about DHCP vs. fixed IP address on all of the PCs on the network. Switching the router can certainly cause any devices set up to use the Fixed IP pattern for the IP address from the old router to be on a different segment and therefore not reachable unless you were to access it via IP address.
Take care,
-steve
