Post subject: | syncing data on a network |
I am in the midst of working on my daughter-in-laws laptop. Among other things I installed a new SSD and upgraded to WIN 10 for her. These things came from a second laptop of mine that is no longer in use. To work on the laptop I included her PC in my wi-fi network. Everything is going fine with the network and all the PC's. Before I return the PC to her I would like to remove some things from the machine, such as bookmarks, some apps, etc. The issue is that if I remove anything from her machine, it is also removed from the other PC's on the network. I have tried to shut down sync on her laptop but this does not prevent the problem. So, my question is how can I remove data from her PC while keeping it on the other networked PCs? As always, thank you in advance for any assistance you can give me. |

Steve will probably do better on this but I have a couple of questions. 1) Are the systems using One Drive? 2) Are you logging in via a local account or a Microsoft account? |

Hi Jay, All the machines have one drive. We are using Microsoft accounts. What would happen if I turned off Wi-fi on the laptop? Would that prevent these changes? Of Course, when I turn wi-fi back on would the changes then take place? |

First I doubt that it is One Drive as it affects the Favorites which, normally, not be in the One Drive Folder. I would say that, yes, disabling Wi-Fi would stop the issue but you MAY do better by switching the laptop to a Local Account. You can also leave the Microsoft Account and tell it not to sync. To control what get synced through a Microsoft Account go to Start => Settings => Accounts => Sync your settings. Turning off some sync options might help. The sync settings listed last above should probably be your first try. If Steve's opinion on this differs I would advise going with Steve's advice. |

If the laptop is using Windows 10 and Sync Settings is configured, as well as OneDrive for specific folders, the way to prevent changes from happening to other machines using the same Microsoft Account would be to do as Jay said for the settings. Favorites in Edge sync is configured within Edge -- https://www.bing.com/search?q=how+to+sync+microsoft+edge&FORM=R5FD1 If another web browser is being used, control for sync would be handled in that browser's settings. OneDrive can be configured on the laptop to stop synchronizing changes. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/back-up-your-documents-pictures-and-desktop-folders-with-onedrive-d61a7930-a6fb-4b95-b28a-6552e77c3057 Of course, that also means that new files added to the laptop will not sync to other devices or the Cloud if you exclude a folder or folders on the laptop. |

Thanks for the input Steve. To be honest I never knew that Edge synced Favorites directly. I figured that it just synced from the Favorites within the user folder. Would the Edge sync also include such things as cookies and passwords? |

Passwords, yes. Cookies, I don't think so. However, you can configure it to sync history and even last open tabs... Attachment: Capture.JPG [ 39.12 KiB | Viewed 3048 times ] |

Hmmm, interesting! just found your settings dialog within Edge Steve. I assume that due to my systems using local accounts all of Edge's sync settings are turned off. I DO see that I can turn on Edge's sync. Looks like something worth playing with. Mayhaps even useful in setting up a new system. Sorry to add other questions joemonte but they just might help as to deciding on what to do. |

Hey guys, I've read and taken both your advice to resolve the problem. I ended up turning off sync in One Note and got into Edge to turn off sync for favorites. I was able to get rid of a lot of info my daughter-in-law doesn't need. I thank you both for your help. Again you guys came through. FYI, I visit this site a couple times a day for what I can learn. It seems you never fail me. Again thanks. |
