A solid state drive is physically larger and more expensive than a flash drive.
Does that mean it is superior to a flash drive?

A flash drive is a solid state drive, too. A flash drive is smaller because it is designed to be removable. A solid state drive meant to be installed inside the computer is larger for a number of reasons -- for example, the slot designed to hold the device. It would probably not be incorrect to say that a solid state internal drive is superior to a removable USB flash drive. I would expect that the internal drive would be designed to be faster with I/O and perhaps even designed for more read/writes over its lifetime than a USB flash drive.

Thanks for your response. I think I'll opt for the flash drive being it's going to be external.

May or may not be best. What would be the purpose of the external drive?

You're welcome. :-)
When deciding what to use, have a look at the device specifications. The read/write speeds and the lifetime writes should be listed. If the device will have only limited use for backup or similar, cheaper and slower would be fine, though don't entrust critical data to a cheap flash drive that you don't have another copy of. Actually, critical data should always be stored in more than one place. ;-) If the device will be accessed regularly and used as a workspace for your data on the PC, I suggest going for a higher grade device with faster read/write access, more robust lifetime writes and even a good warranty.

The only purpose would be having a copy stored away from her home.

If this backup is just data such as pictures a flash drive is probably fine but I'd make more than one.
