Then when he looked further at the instructions that came with the conversion cable, it said "you can use this DVI cable only if your computer has a DVI compliant graphic card installed". He obviously doesn't have such a card.

To add to my previous post...

Not automatically true as to the video card not being DVI capable. If the monitor's input is digital DVI and the cable is analog DVI (or the other way around) the connection would fail even if the video cards can handle DVI output.

Well, that's unfortunate. I hope that he can return the cable. The listing and reviews for the one I linked did state that it would work for DisplayPort on the PC to a DVI monitor input. I've had mixed results with conversion cables in the past, though, hence my warning that it might not work.

Jay, how would one tell if the monitor's input is digital DVI or analog DVI? Same with the cable....ad said nothing about being digital or analog.

I thought these days everything was either analog (VGA) or digital (DVI)? But you are saying that a DVI cable can be either analog or digital? Now I am really confused. :?

No big deal, Steve. It only cost $9.95 with free Prime Shipping. But I am confused as to why his monitor with a DVI port wouldn't accept the DVI cable. I just don't understand how a DVI cable can actually be an analog cable. But again, there are a lot of things I don't understand these days.....

Nice article David. :)

And then there are hybrid DVI cables such as the DVI-D cable that came with my video card. It is actually a DVI-D to HDMI cable that also carries audio along with the video. Both NVIDIA and AMD Radeon do this with some of their gaming cards. At least I think that NVIDIA does. I know that AMD does.
