I installed what I thought was my last ever updates on my Windows 7 Pro computer yesterday and when it got all done, I could not type in my password to check my mail because my wireless mouse would not work. There is no way to run my computer from the living room without my precious wireless mouse. I tried resetting the mouse several times but it was just as though it didn't recognize it. I rummaged through my computer junk drawer and found a usb mouse and plugged it in to the computer itself and "Presto" I had a mouse again. I went immediately to the control panel and did a system restore and removed that Monthly Roll up thing, some Net Framework stuff, and the Malicious software tool that I had just installed and When it was all done, I went back into the living room and my Wireless Mouse was working again.
HALLELUJAH, HALLELUJAH, HALLELUJAH !!!
My guess is that there was something in the Monthly Rollup thingy that stole my mouse. Is there any way to see what's in the Rollup? I could not find out how to see what they rolled up and sent my way. Do you think I should install the updates again? I probably won't do it even if you say yes but thought I would ask anyway just in case you have some convincing evidence that not doing so may make my computer get the blue screen of death and die forever without this latest update.

I would recommend installing each of the updates -- one at a time. If the roll-up turns out to be the cause, go to Control Panel/Device Manager to remove the wireless mouse after removing the dongle (I assume there is one). Then re-insert the dongle and see if the mouse is detected and reinstalls.

Also trying a different USB port for the dongle MAY help.

I had a look at the display manager and it shows that I currently have 5 HID Compliant Mice installed. I have a 5 port usb device in the Living Room which has 4 dongles plugged in so that has to be my wireless keyboard and 3 wireless mice. The actual computer itself has a usb keyboard and a usb mouse. Why the 3 mice in the living room? Long story. When you use the computer a lot like I do, the mouse tends to run down so I got a spare and installed it and was able to turn it on and keep going when that happened. As for the third mouse, I had heard that the later usb mice do not have a light on all the time and the batteries last longer so I got one and using it now. I have no idea how that works but it definitely does not have a light. Anyway, aside from all that, those 5 HID Compliant Mice are not identified individually so I have no way of knowing which one to remove from the display manager as they are all named HID compliant Mouse. One more really big question I have. 1. When MS ends updates on Monday, will the ability to restore to a previous date still work?

Yes, System Restore should still work.

Go to your Control Panel then System then System Protection then Configure.
Make sure that the top option is selected in the top part of the dialog. As long as there is enough disk space I usually set the disk usage to 10%-15%. Apply and OK your way out. On my Windows 7 virtual machine the disk usage is set to 10%.
If System Restore is already enabled just leave it alone.

For the identification of the mice, two ideas come to mind. 1. Remove the dongle for the mouse that stopped working. 2. Remove all of the mice from device manager, one at a time until the problematic one stops working. At that point, before Windows decides to re-enable it, remove it's dongle. Then try the roll-up again, plugging the problem mouse back in after it is done.

She made a baby so maybe I need to change my name to Auntie Allyson. Anyway, during my absence, support for MS has ended. Since everything including my dongles all seem to be working as is the computer itself, I have decided not to install that last roll up. I would like to thank all of you for the help you have given me. Auntie Allyson
