I use a Logitech M310 wireless mouse on my Win10 computer. The Drag & Drop capability of the mouse suddenly quit. When I click on a file in the right pane, drag it over to a folder in the left pane, and then release the mouse button to drop the file, the file is not dropped like it always was before. Instead, the folder in the left pane opens up to reveal all the folder contents.

I know I can always right click the mouse and use the "Move to folder" command in the dropdown context menu, but for me that is not as expedient as the Drag & Drop.

All else seems to be working on my mouse, so I would appreciate any input on how to fix this problem. I tried the Escape key recommendation cited in several websites, but that didn't work. Thanks in advance.....

Have you rebooted the computer? It may be a Windows Explorer/Shell problem rather than a mouse problem.

Steve, my computer stays on pretty-much 24/7, but for one reason on another (Windows updates, storms) it has been rebooted several times since this problem started about a month ago. In reviewing various website comments, this problem is not uniquely mine.

Other than a reboot (which I will try again), is there something else I can do to identify/resolve a Windows Explorer/Shell problem?

Don't do just a re-boot. Do a complete shut down and unplug the system.

Just as a test try a drag/drop holding down either the CTRL or Shift key depending on if you want to copy or move the folder.

Can you drag and drop to move or copy a file within the same pane of Windows Explorer (right hand pane, for example)?

I found an interesting article with a simple fix you might try:

Thanks Jay...holding down the Ctrl key does work for copying a file. I have no problem in doing that, I just never had to do it before. Copying without pressing the Ctrl key was always the default for drag & drop.

I will do a complete shut down tonight. I will even unplug the system and carry it out to the garage for at least 15 minutes. Just kidding....but you have made a believer out of me when it comes to eliminating some problems via a complete shutdown/umplug.

Steve, within the same pane, the drag/drop moves the file rather than copying the file.

Thanks Steve. I had seen this article.....in fact, that's where I got the Esc key solution that I referred to in my original post, but that didn't work for me. Tonight I will try their 2nd recommendation, which is to do a restart. However, I will go one better and shut my system completely down as Jay suggested.

I will keep you posted on what a shutdown accomplishes.

If holding down the CTRL key works I don't see it being the mouse.

In the same pane, where there are multiple sub-folders shown, left click and drag to a sub-folder should move. In your case, it copies?
Note that if you left click and drag from one drive to another drive, if both are shown, it should copy.
