No issue, just an observation. ;)

I don't know if any others use really old software as do I such as Windows 2000 and XP era games. I just find it rather ironic that some... many... of these old games run better on older video cards. This is especially obvious if the game offers the option to use hardware acceleration.

Let's take Zuma Deluxeas an example. If I enable hardware acceleration it will drop the display to a square such as would be expected on an XP or 2000 CRT era monitor. If I turn off the acceleration I have the game in wide screen format. On the other hand, if acceleration is on, the balls spin while they don't if acceleration is off. Personally I prefer the acceleration off with static balls but wide screen.

Of course this is due to the game code not being able to properly recognize the video card as current cards were not even a thought at the time. After all my SAPPHIRE AMD NITRO Radeon R9 380 series 4GB Video Cardis obviously able to run the games at much more than the max they were designed.

Like I said, no issue, just an observation. :)

I have a similar problem with the older games I play, although none of them are action games. What happens is the window opens larger than my monitor dimensions and so I can not see parts of the window, or it opens as a small window, so small I can not make out what I am looking for. I have always attributed to the interaction of the display drivers and the program. Sometimes the game will not even open. If I wait for the next build of Windows, it often goes back to working normally.

Jay, I would say you observations is very interesting with you action games and I think my problems is mostly a display problem.

I play my games on my laptop so it does not have a powerful, up to date, video card

I also think that it could have to do with the DirectX version installed. My video card is DirectX 12 and my games are designed for, probably, DirectX 7 or 8.

Bill, what kind of video card do you have and is it connected via HDMI? If it is a Radeon and HDMI you MAY be able to fix your issue with HDMI Scaling in Radeon Settings.

It is a Radeon R7 built into the MB.

Open Radeon Settings and go to Display to see if you have a scaling option. If so you should be able to scale down for the game so that it fits the screen.

I don't really know why but every time I update my video drivers I have to adjust the HDMI scaling on my second monitor; probably because I always do clean installs.

You may also want to try disabling Fullscreen Optimization under Compatibility options under Properties for the game.

<edit>
As an add-on to the DirectX thought I have installers for ~1800 old Reflexive Arcade games... Way back when I helped them with some JavaScript code and they gave me pretty much everything they had at the time. Reflexive was bought out by Amazon.

Anyway I have SO MANY of their installers that I don't even have a clue as to what all is there to this day. Thinking old games I installed a few and some failed due to a failure to be able to access Direct 3D which, of course, is part of DirectX. Some of the failures I could probably fix with compatibility mode settings but didn't bother.

LOL! I think I'm about to go on a Yahtzee marathon. Or mayhaps I'll go to my SNES emulator and play some Yoshi's Island. ;)

Sigh, I wish I could find the original public domain version of Bud Redhead. It was/is a very fun platform type game that was totally free.

I did not even know there were settings called Raedon Settings. I have been trying to do it all with the Windows settings, playing with the game settings of Full Screen or not and then noticing that the Task bar has to be set to auto close or the display will keep a black bar on the left of the screen (where my Task bar resides).
Thanks, it worked for one game I keep going back to..Prime Suspect.
