Two days ago one of my external drives starting humming. What surprises me is that it is one of my 7-year warranty Verbatims (Samsung), it is about 3 years old. It makes no other noises, no knocking, banging, anything, just humming which goes away after an hour or so, then quiet and normal.

Time to start saving my stuff to another drive?
Thanks, Acadia

p.s. GG and I had breakfast with Bill G. and his wife Sue this morning, they both look great.

Even a drive under warranty can fail... ;) Back up the drive to be safe!

Could this just be acoustics, the drive mechanism causing vibration against the surface on which it sets? Test this by moving the drive to a bit of a different position. On a hunch, if moving the drive does not work, I'd suspect a spin bearing that expands after running a while stopping the noise.

Ok, Joan, I will try to remember that (GG will tell you to forget it, he never remembers anything). We will not be seeing Bill and Sue again until September.

Wear and tear. Happens to everything. A little hum isn't bad until it is, right?

Glad to hear about Bill G. I haven't seen in a few years. My best to him as well.

Thanks, Manny, will tell him, along with Joan's best wishes. Bill G. will hear because I have already told GG and she WILL remind me one way or another. :mad4:

Have you moved the drive as I suggested to make sure that it is not just an acoustic issue?

No, too lazy, also, the drive has sat there for about 1 1/2 years now without being moved. Two things, the first may be fooling me. The noise does not last as long now. The humming originally lasted a couple of hours, now only about 1/2 hour, trying to trick me? Second I checked, and with the exception of a couple of entire c:drive backups which I could still recover from anyway without them, I evidently am already backuped with my other backups which I was not completely sure about at the time; layer upon layer. As I have said before, don't you just love the simplicity of the computer technology. :wacko2:
