Sounds like a plan.
Going from a spin drive to an SSD you should notice an better performance. Just curious; what SSD did you get? I run three. 2 500 GB M.2 PCIe drives for system and clone backups and a 240 GB SATA SSD for my video conversions.

Hi guys, A very basic question of which I am not sure of the answer. I intend to install a new SSD in an older PC. I intend to install win 10 by using a backup USB recovery drive. When I replace the drive (presently a SATA HDD) with the new SSD I know I will have to format the drive which should then be empty. If I simply insert the usb and turn on the PC should the PC boot from the usb or do I have to change the boot order? For some reason I just can't remember the procedure. Ah, the joys of old age. |

You would want to set your boot order to boot from USB before the hard drive. Another option would be if your system has a boot menu key which, in many cases is F9 or F11. You would access this at the same time as you would to enter your BIOS. No need to format the drive first as that chan be done during the Windows install. You may find it easier and quicker to clone the old HDD to the new SSD if the SSD is large enough. Doing a clone you would end up with the SSD being the same as the HDD and ready to boot by changing the boot order to list the SSD. |

When finished doing backup restore or clone, make sure that you boot with ONLY the new drive attached (remove power form other drive or remove it all together) that way Windows won't try to boot from the old drive and will make sure the new drive as the correct driver letter. |

Thanks guys. I will take your advice. I had intended to totally remove the old HD anyway so that will not be an issue. As for cloning I want to totally re-install windows. There seems to be a bunch of annoying issues with the old drive. |

I've ordered a Samsung 870 EVO 1 T 2.5" SATA III internal. I've installed two of these in various laptops with good success. I'll tell you how it goes after installation. |

My system SSD is a Samsung 960 EVO M.2. Samsung seems to make a pretty decent SSD. |
