Post subject:  Storage Sense Turned On

Just recently I started getting Notifications on my Win 10 computer that my Storage Sense had been turned on for me. I wasn't even aware of that setting, and I'm still not sure what it does or doesn't do.

Can someone explain this to me? And is it something I should now leave on? Thanks in advance......

Hi BB, if you click the start button then bring up Settings you can click on System and under the heading for Storage you will find Storage Sense, it can free up space for you by getting rid of redundant files if Windows thinks you are running out of space.

Thanks, Joan. But all that makes me nervous. I don't know what Windows means by redundant files. Also, it says that Storage Sense will save files to two or more drives, and let you create a new pool & storage space. So why suddenly is Windows interested in doing all that for me, and what (if anything) does it cost me in functionality? Just curious....

Sorry I can't help you there, it's not something I've looked into and as I have plenty of storage on my machines and I regularly use Disk Clean to get rid of clutter I doubt if it's something that will bother me.
I expect either Steve or Jay will be able to give you more details.

By default, Storage Sense *only* removes old files from the Recycle Bin and old Temp files. You can modify it to remove more, but it is basically very safe.

Thanks, Steve......good reference. I don't know how you always manage to find those good websites. I guess you have to be smart to get smart, lol.

I wonder why Windows just suddenly decided to turn Storage Sense on for me? Was it 'sensing' that I had a lot of clutter? I think I will leave it turned on but just ensure that it does not delete my Download files, as I save some of them in case I have to reinstall. But as you noted, the default is to remove only Temp files and files from my Recycle Bin.

Lots of experience with searching for reference information from years of dealing with the Microsoft forums, I guess. It took a while to learn which resources to trust and which to avoid. :-) I also follow a whole slew of technology news to keep up to date on computers and I'm active in the Windows Insider program and have been beta testing for many years!
I also have files in Downloads that I don't want deleted, so I won't let anything "clean" that automatically for space. And, I keep them backed up elsewhere just in case.

Me too on backing up my Download files....not only with Macrium and Acronis, but also with SyncToy. I'm a firm believer in backups, probably to the point of overkill.

One can never have too many backups. ;-)
