BB's thread about his issues with his wildlife cameras got me thinking about a unit I got for free quite a while back and didn't even plug it it, it is USB. I think I may just use it as a security camera in my apartment even though it is really designed for a car. It seems to be made by an outfit called "Keep Truckin".

I have yet to do anything but to plug it into my main system via a front USB port but it worked right away and was detected automatically to the point that I was able to setup import folders. The unit itself has 1.16 GB internal storage. Since it is really designed for a vehicle it has two cameras. One of the first tasks will be to turn one of the cameras off if possible.

If I can get it figured out and I like I'll mount it on top of the hood of my aquarium which is a corner and close to a powered USB hub under a chair next to the tank for power. I would not want to mount right with my computers as, in case of theft, it would also probably be taken. Putting on the tank it would give a wide angle view of most of my apartment's main living area including the entrance and most of my media wall along with putting it sort of "out of sight while in plain view".

Problem right now is to get a full manual and their app. The mini manual states the site as https://keeptruckin.com but that seems to redirect to https://gomotive.com/ where I have not yet found anything useful. I'm likely to find what I need by searching but have not yet really tried. If all else fails there is a support phone number. ;)

Oh, here is a quick 11 second clip cut from a three minute video that the thing recorded. It seems to record in three minute clips but that MAY be adjustable, just don't know yet.

Would be nice if it can be set to motion sensitive like some Logitech cams but, again, I just don't know yet.

The video quality seems good enough to identify anyone in my apartment that should not be there but the video is still not good as the unit is just sitting on my floor kinda pointing up toward my coffee table. Still looks like it could be a decent security cam.

Sigh, so now you get to see the ugly me. ;) Really the video quality is not all that bad and the thing was free. ;)

If it is a Dash cam, it probably records continuously and overwrites when powered on. And it would save clips when it detects a collision event or something that jars it. That's how most work at least.

I expect the same Steve as to it recording all the time while powered. The one I had in my car started a new video every 5 minutes. This does 3 minute clips. That doesn't bother me but I want to be able to disable the second camera. In the long run I probably won't even use it but it's something to mess with. ;)
