...(How Many Can You Get Right?)
https://youtu.be/CyDI1dhk3g8This had my wife and I in fits of laughter... there was some debate about some of the slang, mainly because she's from the West Coast and i'm from the East Coast... add that some of the given slang is from Doric dialect didn't help... e.g. The answers for loon and quine are definitely Doric, in the central belt a "loon" is someone akin to a lunatic and "quine" neither of us had ever heard.
What is Doric dialect?
cf.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doric_dialect_(Scotland)In an attempt to try and explain what that means...
Scotland is a country of many dialects and language, Aberdeen is only 160 miles north of Edinburgh but when i go there i struggle to understand what they say. I can usually get by but that is usually only because the locals tone down their dialect for me.
When i was a schoolboy i went tattie howking with a friend from school who's parents owned property in Laurencekirk, about 30 miles south of Aberdeen, when i was on the farm howking i didn't understand a word anyone said to me... i relied on my school friend to translate everything that was said to me!
To this day i still marvel at the diversity of language within Scotland, for a country of only 5 and a half million it's quite remarkable... and no wonder visitors struggle!
