A sign from the Roman Gods that takeaway food will always survive no matter what?... make up your own mind ;)

At a time when non-essential retail is again closing to the public all over the world, with fastfood outlets only being allowed to open for delivery... a two thousand year old takeaway is set to re-open to the public!

Without doubt 2020 will go down in human history and be talked about for centuries if not millennia, i wonder if any of the takeaways we know today will still be around in another two thousand years?

A "fast food" shop from the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, which was destroyed in a volcanic eruption almost 2,000 years ago, is to open to the public - for viewings only - next year.

Fyi, i'm undecided whether the painting of the dog next to the duck and chicken meant dog was on the menu, or if dogs should be kept on a leash?

I hope the latter, but in Roman times i suspect all bets were off! :rofl2:

As to the dog it is possible in either direction but it is only the custom of our societies that say a dog is not food. The first picture DOES show a leash on the dog. It's a good thing that beef became such a common form of edible protein instead of dogs or we would need a LOT more dogs!

As to the concept of take-out foods I wonder if the format has not been changed on a permanent basis. I would not be at all surprised if dine-in options at fast food places never come back. I casually know an assistant manager that works at a local McDonald's and he told me quite a while back that their profit margin was actually better with only having the drive-through. This actually makes sense as they need fewer in-store employees to function.

Interesting that your first thought was McDonalds... that was mine as well! LOL

Food is an oddity, during the first and second world wars horse was an unrationed staple of the British diet... but if you offered horse to a Brit today you'd probably be you jailed!

As far as dine-in options go, i have no doubt that option will persist when this pandemic is over... fastfood outlets made their name off the back of people going into the premises... without the dine-in option they'd still be street corner experiences that most would have no interest in.

That said, i'm still not convinced the "West" is ready to order "Dog" from a menu, but then when times insist that that's the only option who knows?.... dog seems to go down well in certain areas of asia.
