Why do I have a hunch that Gordon likes Janis Joplin or, at least, the song Me And Bobbie McGee?

LOL! Well "Freedom is just another word..." was a pretty good hint. ;) What can I say? I'm 62 and grew up listening to Joplin.

Hey Gordon. Just saw you.

I've been playing in Daytona Beach. Went there for motorcycle week. Great weather and all kinds of other bouncy things.

Go ahead Manny, rub it in. Here I am in the middle of that nor'easter. 15 inches so far and more coming. Wind chills down to 6 above expected tonight. :cry5:

My heart goes out to you Acadia. In Sheridan WY we are hitting mid 50's to low 70's...

I hope you don't lose power, Acadia. That's the worst. The rest you can stand if you've got power.

This is true Patty. Where I'm from in Ohio gets many severe winter storms and my sister and her hubby got tired of losing power. They had a full house backup generator put in. This past winter the area lost power for about 3 days but they did not due to the generator.

Saw the same solution when I lived in Florida Patty. Yes, such generators are costly but you can cut it down to just essentials such as fridge/freezer and some lights for around $700.00. Think about a hurricane in Florida when areas are without power for a week or more on any given storm. How many storm seasons does it take for the backup power to pay for itself just due to not losing food?

I would agree if it were said that my sister's solution was extreme but they have the money. Her hubby was a programmer for Blue Cross and later Cleveland's power company. He is under a pretty decent pension. ;) Funny thing is that he knows just about nothing about computers. He could probably program just about anything you want but my sister has to help him on the internet. :dunno:

Thanks for all the concern everyone but we normally have two things going for us. First, we USUALLY have a backup generator, but lately we've been having problems with it, need to get them out here AGAIN to look at it. Second, and much more reliable, we live right beside the power substation that supplies us and almost half of Harrisburg, so we are first on the line and the least likely to lose power. If we lose power, thousands lose power, so they would be quick to fix it. The previous owner told us that in the 28 years they lived here they only lost power for a little over 3 hours total.

Jay, I wasn't implying the money wasn't worth it - it definitely is!

Acadia, that's good. :)

Oh yes. Our water (the well) and septic (s%&t removal) all depend on electric, not hooked up to city or municipal. If we lost power for any real length in time things would get awfully thirsty and, er, ah, smelly around here. :nbite:

I didn't take you post as implying that it wasn't worth it Patty. It is just that you are totally right about it being 'pricey'. ;) Actually, if I understand their system right, it had to cost a fortune. If power goes out they lose nothing at all. All electrical outlets will function as normal, fridge and freezer is fine and even the hot water heater is covered along with heat and AC.

I would expect that as to the well Acadia but have never had a residence with septic so was a bit surprised that it also relies on power.

Jay, it depends on rather or not you need a pump. If everything is flowing downhill you need no pump. If on the other hand all the, er, stuff needs to flow uphill, then you need a pump.
