Oh Steeeeeve... I'm trying to help a friend in my apartments connect to a wireless router. The system involved will connect to the wireless but only with limited access, no internet. When troubleshooting is allowed it reports an invalid IP. The last time that the system was on-line was through a different wireless router. My thought is that his system is still trying to use the last IP from the previous router. My question is which of the following would be the best way to go or am I totally off base? 1) Just kill the current connection and use the Wizard to create a new connection. The system is Windows 8.1. 2) Use Admin access to ipconfig with the following commands. ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew 3) Is there another route I should seek? LOL! I NEVER claimed that networking and such was my forte...

Release and renew should do it. Is it giving you a 169.xxx.xxx.xx address?

I haven't even run ipconfig to see what it is reporting. It is going to wait until tomorrow.
As an added note the previous router was a Netgear. Netgear Genie (or something like that) is installed. In the future it is quite possible that the Netgear router will be in use again. Should Netgear Genie be removed? Genie is a connection manager.

Genie is probably overriding the built-in wireless manger, dump it. It can always be reinstalled later if needed.

uninstall Netgear Genie and never install it again. On Windows 8.x, I find that right click on Network icon and troubleshoot is easier than typing anything into a command prompt.

Troubleshooting does not help. It is Troubleshoot that reports the invalid IP.

The genie is preventing it from reaching the DHCP server - which is the new router. Hence it is getting (or isn't getting) an invalid I/P.

I figured as much with Genie. I didn't know it was on the system when I first posted the question.

Cannot uninstall Genie. It does not show in Programs and Features and the un-install option when right clicked does not work. Still the issue SEEMS to be resolved, time will tell.
The situation is that I am letting this friend 'leach' off of my connection while he is having some difficulties. I have to give credit to Charter Cable as I checked the actual restrictions on doing this as I had thought that any sharing of connection had to be in the same residence. When I spoke to their rep I was told that as far as they were concerned it was the same residence as it was the same building. I did not expect that response.
OK, here is why I think things are now working... 1) Even though the Netgear Genie is still on the system the actual router is no longer powered. I think that this is the actual cure.
a. There was no way to turn off the potential connection to the Netgear router. I think that this is due to a test in their software for strength of signal. I think this as I could bring his system to my apartment and there was never an issue with connection. Take the system back to his apartment and the connection would fail.
b. I HATE Netgear, never have liked... Can anyone tell me how to successfully uninstall Genie? I figure if needed that I would attempt to re-install then un-install. This appears to not be viable unless the Netgear router is active.
2) Can't say that it actually had an affect but I got permission to remove garbage. I removed about twenty items including a lot of Apple compatibility stuff. I also removed a lot of Toshiba applications.

I didn't do a serious search but did search and found nothing specific to Genie. I have noted the link but am not going to actively do more on the system unless needed. Everything seems to be working fine and I'm not going to mess with it further. Except for friends in need I just don't do the repair bit anymore. It is actually sort of a funny situation. When I was doing builds and repairs as a business I had to fight for clients. Now, granted a different part of the country, I could set up business and probably have 150-200 clients within three to four months. I just don't want it any more... funny how things work out. I do still charge at times but normally not. I only take a job if it actually interests me.

Sigh, all wasted effort... I recommended that the user install the free MBAM and do a full scan. MBAM found a little over 1000 problems which he allowed to be removed. I would assume that at least most were PUPs as he runs acceptable security. He didn't like that something didn't run right after the scan and clean so he does a restore to factory. So now he can't get a reliable connection to my router, back to step one except that it isn't happening. He is set up to get his own cable modem from Charter tomorrow. Not worth the $20.00/month he was going to give me toward my cable bill. Let the Charter tech deal with it.
