I am now dual booting Windows 7 and Windows 8 Release Preview on my laptop. I wanted to isolate each OS partition and a very simple method dawned on me.

Do your dual boot as normal installing Windows 7 first.

Go to Drive Management in each OS and remove the drive letter from the partition that holds the other OS.

Not only will the partition for the other OS not show up in Windows Explorer or My Computer, it will not be accessable. I know that the Windows 7 partition will not be accessable from Windows 8 and am pretty sure that it will be the same the other way around.

Oops! Release Preview. I'll correct the first post.

Hey Jay,

FYI. I now have a triple boot on my system. I have Vista, Win 7, and Win 8 on three different partitions on 2 hard drives. I had Vista and 7 on two different drives, split one of the drives into 2 partitions and added Win 8. The install was easy with no problems. Windows boot manager works perfectly with Win 8 as the default OS.

Just saying...

If you go to System/Advanced/Startup and recovery in the control panel in Windows 8 you can change the default to which ever OS you would like along with the time delay before the default loads.

I used to dual boot a lot of OS's but mostly just use virtual machines now. The most I've ever had on a multi-boot was DOS 6, Windows 3.1, Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista and Linux. Some folks will advise against but I use one data partition to share between OS's and have never had an issue.

One little utility that should be included in any such multi-boot is VistaBootPro. Here is a link to the last free version.

I have just tested this utility on my dual boot with Windows 7 & 8 and it worked fine. It will grumble a little if there is not an instance of Vista but still works fine.

My main concern with this software is the ability to backup, edit and restore the boot information. I backed up the boot loader with both Windows 7 & 8 then removed Windows 8 from the loader (one click). The following boot went straight to Windows 7 with no menu display for the now defunct dual boot. Once booted I restored the backup of the boot loader and all was again fine with the dual boot.

I was just reading through this thread as it caught my eye while posting another new thread. Just to keep things current I would like to update my advice in an above post. I had suggested the use of VistaBootPro for dual boot management and it will still work. However, unless Vista is included in the multiple boot, VistaBootPro will do a bit of grumbling about not finding a Vista install.

As a multi-boot manager I now suggest EasyBCD.
