First installed on 11/04/2018 but now the 'updated' version has installed at least 3 times today, and it keeps coming back

Fortunately i don't have 'install updates automatically' enabled or this could be an endless cycle until Microsoft pull or amend the patch.

I'm not a big fan of hiding updates purely because i don't trust they wouldn't effect an updated KB article bearing the same article number... in this case i'll just let the notification reside in my notification area and periodically check for an updated version.

The gift that keeps on giving: Win7 Monthly Rollup KB 4093118 installs over and over:

In case anyone is interested...
[Note, i know not what a "kludge" nor a "Carnak" means, no offence is intended if they are offensive to anyone, i didn't write the article and didn't see anything offensive so I'm reposting it with the best of intentions to help inform.]

You won’t believe why the Win7 Monthly Rollup, KB 4093118, keeps installing itself:

Interesting read Doddie.

A "kludge" simply boils down to a problem or hindrance.

And I think Carnak refers to Carnak the Great, an old Johnny Carson routine on the Tonight Show.

My old desktop runs Win 7 Pro (in dual-boot mode with Win 10 Pro), so I cranked it up yesterday and performed the latest updates. KB4093118 was successfully installed, and thus far there have been no re-installations. I'll keep checking every day to see what happens, if anything.

I also tried updating on the Win 7 side of my laptop. LOL! Had to catch up as it seems that the last time I updated was November 2017. Don't use the laptop much and usually boot to Win 10 when I do.

Anyway I caught it up on updates and am stuck with the repeating update for the security update. I only tried twice but, if I manually check for updates it is still there even though it shows as installed. I could hide it but probably won't as it is only a 32 MB download and just takes a second. I want to see if it goes away after the May Updates.

As a note I also installed the optional preview update at the same time as the initial install of important updates.

I checked again this morning.......still no re-installs of KB4093118. And I never did install the Optional Preview update.

But speaking of Optional updates, I did see something I never noticed before. I don't knowingly install Optional updates, yet several have been installed, including one this morning. And these are always named "Definition Update for Microsoft Security Essentials". So are these Optional updates being installed by the Security Essentials program itself?

In other words, when I get notice that the virus & spyware definitions for Security Essentials need to be updated and I click OK....is this when these updates are installed? And then I guess these Optional updates become part of the Windows Update history, along with the Important & Recommended updates that I have installed? I guess I never noticed that before.

I checked my Win 7 desktop this AM and saw that I installed KB 4093118 on 4/14/2018
Checked for updates and KB 4093118 wasn't listed but KB4093113 was. It took 3 tries
before KB4093113 installed. 219mbs.

As far as I know MSE updates do update on their own.

chasbox, KB4093113 is the Optional Preview update, and I didn't try that. Jay said he did, but he didn't mentioned how many times it took.

I can't remember the KB # for the one that wants to keep installing. I just remember that it was listed as a security update.

Just to confirm... The KB that wants to keep installing on my Win 7 system is the expected KB4093118. This is not the optional 'preview' update.

Hmmm, odder and odder...

I gave KB4093118 one more shot on an install then did a manual check for updates. KB4093118 was no longer there but an update to IE11 was. I installed that update and have manually checked twice for updates manually and KB4093118 is no longer there. On a manual check Windows Updates states that Windows is up to date and that there are no updates available.

Weird
Something came up and I did a restart. As the desktop screen came up I see a bubble saying Win update
installed an update. so I checked update history and the newly installed update was not there. Now
the only update waiting to be installed was a Win Defender update. Like I said weird.

Jay says "odder and odder". Chasbox says "weird". I agree with both of you.

Last night I turned on my older dual-boot desktop and let it boot into Win 10 Pro rather than the default Win 7 Pro. Since the computer had not been on for a few days, it started downloading and installing Win 10 updates. I walked away, checked back later, and the update process had come to a screeching halt with the message "We can't install some updates because other updates are in progress. Try again?".

I mean, hello - I thought Microsoft was responsible for installing their updates? Why are they walking all over themselves in doing so?

I did click on Try Again, and the updating process continued and completed. Odd & weird!!

FWIW, something appears to have changed on the 23rd (22nd?).

cf.
https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.co ... =KB4093118
Note: KB4093118 was and is only a 32kb part of the monthly rollup afaict and the full package as seen is unlikely to be actually known as "KB4093118"??, the search returns that KB article however.

There doesn't seem to be a lot of information readily available however i don't use the MS web forums these days so there may be somewhere on them, that said, this article on a website i have no previous knowledge of does make some sense... not least because when i shut down my PC on the 22nd at 22:30 BST, KB4093118 once again installed unbeknown to me and hasn't been heard or seen since.

Remember this post? Last night in addition to a new update for 1709, KB4093118 for Windows 7 got refreshed. It appears that once it’s metadata got fixed we no longer have the issue with it being reoffered to that platform.

Sort of begs another question, how did the 'refreshed' version get onto my PC without my knowledge if that's indeed what happened?
Don't think i'll go there though ;)

I don't recall anything about Win 7 being refreshed on my system but DID experience a crash of Win Updates on the first attempt of doing the IE update. I actually can't say that Updates crashed, I just got tired of waiting and killed.

Same here; no important updates available for Win 7 as of 6:30pm CDT 4/26/18.

And KB4093118 was only installed once, back on 4/21/18.
