Puzzled by something, this is on a Win 7 system, and as I now understand it Windows Defender can mean different things depending upon your OS. Upon reviewing my most recent MS monthly updates before install, I noticed an update of some kind, perhaps only signature, for Windows Defender. I had turned WD off at least two years ago, how did it get turned on? Ok, i guess that is an impossible question to answer if you don't have my system. Recently I upgraded from Online Armor to Emsisoft Internet Security, same company. Could upgrading have reactivated WD? For a couple minutes my system would have been unguarded, in that particular way, did Windows turn WD back on? WD certainly appears to be benign enough, has not interfered with anything, I only noticed it being reactivated because of my monthly MS updates. I have mostly turned it back off, but not completely until I learn more, but I am especially curious as to how it got turned back on.
I would probably only turn WD completely off if it duplicates some of my other security programs while using up excessive resources. I don't mind duplication if my system does not notice it, I believe in "layers". Thanks, Acadia

Hi Acadia
I've tested Windows Defender against some malware, including ransomware I have. It flunked period.

Can't say why it turned on as it doesn't auto-enable when you uninstall your antivirus software on Windows 7. Turn it back off.

I just peeked and noticed another oddity. I know I never turned off Defender on my media system Win 7 install yet it is off. I wonder if MBAM Pro turned it off when installed...
Acadia, might as well turn it back off as it really isn't strong. Of course every layer helps so if all is well it would not hurt to leave on but I doubt that it would help much.
If turning off Defender was part of the install process for Online Armor, not a separate act done manually by you, I could see the possibility of Online Armor turning it back on when uninstalled but can't say anything factual.
