I thought I'd share this here, I've been looking for a file search utility that didn't rely on windows indexing (way too slow and takes for ever to fill the index for occasional use) that just worked like the old WinXP search did and supports wildcards etc.

I finally think I've found what I've been looking for... a major plus for me is that when selecting files in the search results i see a full right click context menu meaning i can either launch or enqueue mp3's to Winamp straight from the returned results :)

Best of all is the software is free, there is however a section of the top taskbar set aside for donations but as this does nothing to be obtrusive i don't find it an issue (see screenshot in the link).

I've also been using WizMouse by the same company for years, it brings non focus windows to the fore without the need to click on them which is brilliant on a multi monitor setup and the donation box has never once been an issue.

Anyways make up your own mind but i'm loving it so far...

A couple of snippets from the webpage:
Quote:
"Find files on your hard drive - FAST!"
Works on 32 and 64 bit versions of Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, 8 and 10

Features

Find files by name on your hard drives almost instantly
VERY Fast scanning! WizFile reads the master file table (MFT) directly from NTFS formatted hard drives so it's ready for use very quickly after start up.
Search by file name or full path name
Multiple search terms supported
Wild card file search (* and ? wild cards supported)
Monitors for file changes while active - your visible file search results will always be up to date
Keeps track of folder sizes - any changes made to the file system will automatically update the folder sizes
Does not require a separate database file - all file data is kept in memory

P.s. There is a portable option available but as i have little need for that i haven't tried it.

Blimey!, Just found out i have 526 Pink Floyd files totalling 3.2GB... admittedly many are duplicates but it does highlight how valuable a decent search utility can be when it scans over multiple hdd's in seconds rather than minutes!

Despite having utilities like Treesize installed there is little point if there is no way to seamlessly play files from different folders and drives if they can't easily be compared for quality... size means nothing when it comes to audio quality.
